TDThe Executive Chairman of Ibeju Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has sounded the alarm over emerging security concerns in the area.

Olowa urged residents to remain vigilant while assuring them of government’s commitment to their safety.

In a public security advisory released over the weekend, Olowa disclosed that the local government had received reports of the arrival of certain groups of persons into parts of the community, sparking unease among residents.

He emphasized that the administration had immediately engaged relevant security agencies at both state and local levels.

They are now actively monitoring developments and implementing intelligence-driven measures to safeguard lives and property.

“Residents are encouraged to promptly report any suspicious movements or activities through the appropriate channels.

“However, I strongly advise against taking the law into your own hands,” Olowa stated.

The Chairman cautioned against harassment, intimidation, or profiling of individuals, stressing that only authorized agencies have the legal mandate to handle security matters.

He urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities, and uphold the values of peace and tolerance that define Ibeju Lekki.

Broader South West Security Context

The advisory comes at a time when the South West region of Nigeria has been grappling with heightened insecurity.

Communities across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Ekiti States have reported incidents ranging from kidnapping and armed robbery to clashes between local residents and suspected criminal groups.

The menace of banditry and cult-related violence has also raised concerns, with security experts warning that unchecked migration of criminal elements could destabilize relatively peaceful communities.

In recent months, several high-profile kidnappings along highways and within peri-urban settlements have underscored the vulnerability of residents.

Farmers in border communities have also complained of attacks that threaten food security.

Against this backdrop, local governments have increasingly taken proactive steps to reassure citizens and strengthen collaboration with security agencies.

Call for Collective Vigilance

Olowa’s advisory reflects a growing recognition that community vigilance is critical in complementing official security efforts.

By urging residents to report suspicious activities while discouraging mob action or unlawful retaliation, the Ibeju Lekki administration seeks to balance caution with restraint.

The Chairman concluded with a message of reassurance: “Together, we will continue to keep Ibeju Lekki safe, peaceful, and secure for all.”

As insecurity remains a national challenge, the South West’s response is anchored on vigilance, intelligence, and community cooperation.

These will be crucial in preserving stability across the region.
