TDMilitary officers and other suspects accused of plotting a coup to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were arraigned at the Federal High Court on Wednesday in Abuja for trial.

Federal High Court Proceedings

The Federal High Court in Abuja witnessed heightened tension as military officers and several civilians accused of plotting to overthrow President Tinubu were brought to trial under heavy security.

Armed personnel cordoned off the court premises, underscoring the gravity of the charges and the sensitivity of the proceedings.

Arraignment and Pleas

The defendants were formally arraigned on multiple counts, including conspiracy to commit treason and attempts to destabilize Nigeria’s constitutional order.

Each of the accused entered a plea of not guilty as the charges were read aloud, setting the stage for what promises to be a protracted legal battle.

Defense Objections

Counsel representing the accused immediately raised preliminary objections.

They challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to hear the matter, arguing that the charges were improperly filed and that certain pieces of evidence presented by the prosecution were inadmissible.

The defense maintained that due process had not been observed, insisting that the rights of the accused must be protected in line with constitutional guarantees.

Prosecution’s Position

Government lawyers countered these objections, asserting that the charges were properly instituted and that the evidence gathered during investigations was sufficient to sustain a full trial.

They urged the court to dismiss the defense’s technical arguments, stressing that the allegations were of national importance and required urgent judicial attention.

Court’s Decision

After hearing submissions from both sides, the presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, adjourned the matter to a later date to deliver a ruling on the preliminary objections.

The judge emphasized that the trial would be conducted with fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to due process.

He cautioned all parties to maintain decorum and reminded them that the court was committed to ensuring justice without fear or favor.

Atmosphere in Court

The courtroom atmosphere was charged.

Journalists, civil society observers, and family members of the accused filled the gallery, closely following the proceedings.

Security operatives maintained strict control both inside and outside the court, with access tightly regulated.

The presence of uniformed officers underscored the seriousness of the allegations and the government’s determination to prevent any disruption.

Next Steps

The substantive trial is expected to resume on the next adjourned date.

At that stage, witnesses will be called, and evidence will be examined in detail.

The case is anticipated to attract significant public attention, given its implications for national stability and governance.

In the meantime, the accused persons were remanded at the Department of State Service (DSS) facility.
