THIS DAWN — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in retired Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
The event marks a major reshuffle in the nation’s security leadership amidst heightened insecurity in the country.
The brief but symbolic ceremony was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, early Thursday morning.
The appointment comes just 48 hours after President Tinubu transmitted Musa’s name to the Senate, seeking confirmation for the position.
The upper chamber concluded its screening on Wednesday and approved the nomination.
HIs nomination followed what lawmakers described as a “straightforward and reassuring” interaction with the retired military officer.
In a statement released shortly after the confirmation, President Tinubu commended the Senate for giving accelerated approval to his nominee.
He said the decision came at “a critical juncture in our lives as a nation.”
He described General Musa as “a fine gentleman” whose experience and leadership would play a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture.
“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the President added.
Replacement for Badaru Abubakar
General Musa replaces Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned as Minister of Defence earlier in the week citing health-related concerns.
Musa’s appointment is expected to provide continuity in defence policy, given his recent tenure as Chief of Defence Staff.
With a distinguished military career spanning more than three decades, General Musa remains one of Nigeria’s most decorated officers.
He is a recipient of the prestigious 2012 Colin Powell Award for Soldiering and served as Chief of Defence Staff from June 2023 to October 2025.
He played a central role in Nigeria’s counterterrorism and security operations.
General Musa, who turns 58 on December 25, is expected to bring strategic insight and operational expertise into his new ministerial role.
Presently, Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, and emerging security threats across multiple regions.
The swearing-in marks the beginning of a new phase in the country’s defence leadership.
