TDGovernors, lawmakers and other prominent members of the Labour Party (LP) have emerged as consensus candidates in the party’s primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those returned unopposed are the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who secured the party’s tickets through consensus arrangements endorsed by delegates and stakeholders.
The development followed consultations among party leaders and members aimed at ensuring a smooth and rancour-free primary process.
Party officials said the consensus approach was adopted in constituencies where aspirants reached agreements and received broad support from delegates.
Governor Otti was returned as the Labour Party’s consensus candidate for the Abia State governorship election, while Abaribe emerged as the party’s consensus candidate for his senatorial district.
Other aspirants across various elective positions, including seats in the National Assembly and state legislatures, also emerged through consensus in different parts of the country.
Party leaders described the outcome as a reflection of unity and internal cohesion within the Labour Party, noting that the process helped to avoid unnecessary disputes and strengthen the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to party officials, the primaries were conducted in line with the party’s guidelines and electoral regulations, with delegates affirming the emergence of candidates in constituencies where consensus agreements had been reached.
The Labour Party expressed confidence that its candidates would be well-positioned to compete effectively in the forthcoming elections, citing their experience, track records and acceptance among party members.
The emergence of Otti, Abaribe and other consensus candidates is expected to bolster the party’s campaign efforts as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
