TD By any measure, Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno’s recent claim that he once earned “not less than ₦10 million in a month” from selling akara and bread — his so-called “akara burgers” — is not just implausible, it is insulting to the intelligence of Nigerians.

Delivered during a state covenant prayer service, the statement was framed as a motivational tale of entrepreneurship from humble beginnings.

But instead of inspiring, it has exposed a troubling willingness to bend history for political theatre.

The Mathematics of the Impossible

Let us be clear: in the 1980s, a loaf of bread cost less than ₦1, and akara was sold for mere kobo.

To reach ₦10 million monthly, Eno would have needed to sell millions of units every single month — a logistical impossibility for a roadside food vendor, even if every ExxonMobil worker lined up daily.

The numbers simply do not add up.

Nigerians are not fools; they understand the difference between motivational exaggeration and outright fabrication.

The Career Timeline That Contradicts the Claim

The governor’s own documented career trajectory makes the lie even more glaring.

Born in 1964, Umo Eno began working at Union Bank in 1982 at the age of 18.

By 1985, he was already a manager at Bertola Machine Tools Ltd.

By 1990, he had risen to General Manager at Norman Holdings Limited.

From there, his career advanced steadily into hospitality, investment, and eventually government service.

This timeline leaves little room for the prolonged street-level entrepreneurship he describes.

While it is possible he dabbled in small-scale trading as a teenager, the claim of ₦10 million monthly earnings is inconsistent with both Nigeria’s economic realities and his own professional milestones.

Public Outrage and Skepticism

Nigerians reacted swiftly and sharply. Social media was flooded with disbelief, mockery, and anger.

Many dismissed the statement as “mathematical impossibility,” while others accused the governor of deliberately embellishing his past to craft a rags-to-riches narrative.

In a country where citizens are grappling with economic hardship, such exaggerations feel less like inspiration and more like mockery.

Supporters attempted to defend him, suggesting his words were metaphorical, meant to inspire resilience.

But metaphors do not excuse falsehoods. Leaders must understand that credibility is built on truth, not on fanciful tales designed to score cheap applause.

Why This Matters

Some may argue that this is a trivial controversy — that politicians often embellish their pasts. But this is not trivial.

At a time when Nigerians are enduring inflation, unemployment, and insecurity, honesty from leaders is not optional; it is essential.

When a governor stands before his people and fabricates a story of impossible wealth from akara sales, he undermines trust.

He sends the message that deception is acceptable in public life.

Moreover, such exaggerations trivialize the real struggles of small-scale entrepreneurs who fight daily to survive.

The akara seller on the street today does not make millions; she barely scrapes enough to feed her family.

To inflate such a struggle into a fairy tale of overnight riches is disrespectful to the dignity of honest work.

Conclusion: A Call for Honesty

Governor Umo Eno’s “₦10 million akara burger” story may serve as a parable of ambition, but it is not history.

It is a lie dressed up as inspiration. And lies, no matter how well-intentioned, corrode the moral authority of leadership.

Nigerians deserve leaders who tell the truth, even when the truth is less glamorous.

They deserve narratives grounded in reality, not in fantasy.

If Governor Eno wishes to inspire, let him do so by highlighting his genuine career achievements — his rise from banking to hospitality to governance.

Those milestones are impressive enough without the need for embellishment.

In the end, when an akara-selling governor chooses to lie, he does not elevate entrepreneurship; he diminishes it.

And he diminishes himself.
