TD Former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu, has called on Nigerians to renew their faith in the country, embrace greater unity and strengthen their commitment to building a nation that works for all.
Moghalu made the call in his Independence Day message to Nigerians as the country marks its 66th anniversary of independence.
According to him, the anniversary should not be viewed merely as a celebration of freedom but as an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s journey, honour the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes and recommit to the ideals upon which the country was founded.
Nigeria Remains a Nation of Possibilities
Moghalu said Nigeria remains a country of immense possibilities, blessed with abundant human and natural resources and a population renowned for its resilience, enterprise and capacity to excel.
While acknowledging the challenges confronting the nation, he urged Nigerians not to succumb to despair.
He stressed that the difficulties facing the country should strengthen, rather than weaken, their collective determination to build a prosperous, peaceful and united Nigeria.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and the responsibility to make it work also belongs to all of us,” Moghalu said.
He called for purposeful leadership and responsible citizenship, alongside respect for the rule of law, justice, equity and equal opportunities for all citizens.
The former NIWA chief executive stressed that meaningful national transformation would require unity of purpose and a genuine commitment to the common good.
Moghalu Calls for Issue-Based Politics Ahead of 2027
As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, Moghalu urged citizens and political leaders to embrace issue-based politics, peaceful democratic participation and responsible political engagement.
He appealed to Nigerians to place the interests of the country above personal, ethnic, religious and partisan considerations.
According to him, strengthening democracy, protecting national unity and ensuring a credible electoral process are essential to the country’s continued development.
Moghalu urged political actors and citizens alike to approach the 2027 elections with a sense of responsibility and commitment to Nigeria’s long-term interests.
‘The Nigeria of Our Dreams Remains Possible’
The former NIWA boss encouraged Nigerians to mark the 66th Independence Anniversary with renewed hope and confidence in the future.
He said the Nigeria of the people’s dreams remains achievable if citizens and leaders collectively choose service over self-interest, unity over division and nation-building over personal gain.
Moghalu also prayed that Almighty God would continue to guide, protect and bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while honouring the sacrifices of those who fought and laboured for the country’s independence.
“Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria.
“May the labour of our heroes past never be in vain. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.
