TDThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been jolted by a wave of defections that could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

At the center of this storm in the political terrain is former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.

Tambuwal has formally resigned from the PDP and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

His departure, communicated in a letter dated March 11, 2026, is not just symbolic—it signals a broader unraveling within the PDP, long plagued by internal strife.

Among the defectors from PDP were:

  1. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto South)
  2. Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo (Nasarawa South)
  3. Binos Dauda Yaroe (Adamawa South)
  4. Austin Akobundu (Abia Central)
  5. Lawal Adamu Usman (Kaduna Central)

Tambuwal’s Statement

In his resignation letter, Tambuwal cited “persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions” as the decisive factors behind his exit.

Reflecting on his political journey, Tambuwal expressed gratitude for the opportunities the PDP afforded him.

The opportunities include his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Governor of Sokoto State.

He stressed that Nigeria requires a political platform anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and national development.

Tambuwal’s words carry weight, not only because of his stature but also because they echo frustrations shared by many within the PDP who feel the party has lost its cohesion and direction.

Senate Shake-Up

The Senate witnessed a dramatic shift during plenary as Senate President Godswill Akpabio read letters announcing the defection of nine senators to the ADC.

Nine senators from the PDP, LP, and APGA had defected to the ADC today in the Senate chambers.

Among the defectors were:

1. Sen. Ireti Kingibe FCT, LP to ADC

2. Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo Nasarawa South, PDP to ADC

3. Sen. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Sokoto South, PDP to ADC

4. Binos Dauda Yaroe, Adamawa South PDP to ADC

5. Sen. Austin Akobundu Abia central PDP to ADC

6. Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe Abia South APGA to ADC

7. Sen. Victor Umeh Anambra Central LP to ADC

8. Sen. Tony Nwoye Anambra North, LP to ADC

9. Senator Lawal Adamu Usman Kaduna Central, PDP to ADC

This mass movement underscores the ADC’s growing appeal as an alternative opposition force, positioning itself as a credible challenger to both the ruling APC and the weakened PDP.

House of Representatives Wave

The tremors extended to the House of Representatives, where Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu announced another round of defections:

  • 6 PDP lawmakers crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
  • 6 lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) and Young Progressives Party (YPP) defected to the ADC.

This dual migration—towards both the APC and ADC—illustrates the fragmentation of Nigeria’s opposition and the scramble for relevance ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The defections were not confined to March 12. Just a day earlier, March 11, saw a precursor to the exodus:

3 PDP senators defected to the APC: Amos Yohanna (Adamawa North), Aminu Iya Abbas (Adamawa Central), and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis (Zamfara Central).

Also, 3 PDP House members joined the APC: Mohammed Audu (Taraba), Abdullahi El-Rasheed (Gombe), and Inuwa Garuba (Gombe).

This sequence of exits paints a picture of a party hemorrhaging members at both the state and federal levels.

Analysts’ Take

Political observers argue that the defections are symptomatic of deeper structural issues within the PDP:

  • Leadership disputes that have eroded confidence in the party’s direction.
  • Factional battles that have splintered its unity.
  • Prolonged court cases that have distracted from governance and strategy.

The result is a weakened PDP, struggling to maintain its relevance, while both the APC and ADC capitalize on the vacuum.

Analysts suggest this could mark the beginning of a significant realignment in Nigeria’s political landscape, with the ADC emerging as a fresh opposition force.

Tambuwal’s Final Word

Despite his departure, Tambuwal reaffirmed his commitment to national service, pledging loyalty to the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.

His move, along with the mass defections, sets the stage for a turbulent pre-election period, as parties reposition themselves for the 2027 polls.

Reactions from PDP leadership are expected soon, but the party faces an uphill battle to stem the tide of discontent and restore confidence among its ranks.
