Noticias de This DawnFamilies of miners who died in detention in Niger State are demanding justice and accountability from Nigerian authorities.

The deaths occurred after the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested suspected illegal miners in September.

A presidential investigation attributed the deaths to overcrowding, extreme heat, dehydration and neglect.

The government has referred the investigation’s findings to the Attorney-General for judicial action.

However, bereaved families and survivors say they are still waiting for justice, promised assistance and the return of seized belongings.

A Reuters report published Friday highlighted their concerns and the lasting impact of the tragedy.

Miners’ Families Demand Accountability

The families of the miners say financial compensation cannot replace the relatives they lost.

Zainab Salihu, whose son died in detention, said the family had wanted him to return home alive.

She also told Reuters that her husband’s health deteriorated after their son’s death. He subsequently died, although Reuters could not independently verify the circumstances surrounding his death.

Another grieving father, Dantala Tango, is struggling to accept the death of his 25-year-old son, Suleiman.

Tango spoke about his loss while visiting his son’s grave in Gunu, Niger State.

His account reflects the emotional and financial consequences facing families who lost relatives during the incident.

Some of the deceased were teenagers, intensifying concerns about the treatment of young people held by security agencies.

The deaths also triggered protests and renewed public concern about detention conditions across Nigeria.

Presidential Panel Identifies Serious Failures

A presidential investigative panel examined the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Its findings attributed the tragedy to overcrowding, extreme heat, dehydration and neglect inside the detention facility.

The investigation raised serious questions about the conditions under which the detainees were held.

The government welcomed the findings, according to Reuters.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the report had been forwarded to the Attorney-General for immediate judicial action.

However, the minister did not provide a timetable for compensation or assistance to the families and survivors.

The referral could lead to further legal proceedings, but the outcome remains uncertain.

Families and survivors are of the miners calling for officers found responsible to face appropriate disciplinary and legal consequences.

They argue that accountability is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Survivors Demand Return of Seized Property

Survivors are also demanding the return of belongings allegedly seized during their arrests.

Abdulsalam Yakubu, a 23-year-old survivor, told Reuters that the government’s response had been slow.

He said the authorities should return motorcycles, mobile phones, mining equipment and gold allegedly taken during the arrests.

For the survivors, recovering these possessions could help them rebuild their lives.

Many affected families also face financial uncertainty following the loss of relatives who contributed to household income.

Survivors say compensation alone would not resolve their concerns.

They want the authorities to address the alleged seizure of property alongside the wider questions surrounding the deaths.

Their demands now extend beyond financial support to accountability and improvements in detention practices.

Compensation and Legal Action Remain Uncertain

The presidential panel’s findings have increased pressure on the government to demonstrate meaningful action.

However, the government has not announced a confirmed payment date for affected families and survivors in the Reuters report.

This uncertainty has contributed to frustration among people awaiting assistance.

The next stage will depend partly on the Attorney-General’s response to the investigative report.

Any disciplinary or criminal proceedings would also need to follow the applicable legal process.

Meanwhile, survivors and bereaved relatives continue to seek answers about the incident.

Their demands include accountability for responsible personnel and the return of their belongings.

The case has also renewed concerns about the treatment of suspects before trial.

People held in custody remain entitled to humane treatment and protection from preventable harm.

The incident has therefore raised questions about institutional oversight, detention standards and the responsibilities of security agencies.

Conflicting Figures Require Official Clarification

There is a discrepancy in published accounts of the death toll.

Reuters reported that 37 miners died in custody, reflecting the figure used in its October 30 report.

However, a separate Premium Times report published Friday, citing the investigative committee’s document, said the panel authenticated 33 deaths.

That report also said 14 of the deceased were minors and identified 41 survivors.

The difference between the reported figures requires clarification from the authorities.

ThisDawn News will continue to attribute the figures to their respective sources rather than present the discrepancy as resolved.

Calls Grow for Better Detention Conditions

The deaths have intensified calls for stronger oversight of detention facilities.

On Thursday, the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria called for improved funding and urgent upgrades to detention infrastructure.

The group also urged authorities to prosecute personnel found responsible for wrongdoing.

It argued that overcrowded and poorly ventilated facilities can expose detainees to preventable dangers.

The organisation further called for faster arraignment of suspects before competent courts.

These recommendations reflect broader concerns about prolonged detention and the protection of citizens’ rights.

However, implementing reforms will require government action and effective oversight of security agencies.

For the affected families, the immediate priorities remain justice, assistance and answers about their loved ones’ deaths.

This Dawn News will continue monitoring developments and reporting verified updates on the investigation.
