Noticias de This DawnImagine you are standing outside at night, looking up at the stars. You see countless stars, planets and galaxies scattered across an enormous space.

Now, here is something astonishing:

The universe is not just expanding. It is expanding faster and faster.

Something appears to be driving this increasing expansion. Scientists call that mysterious something dark energy.

Let’s break it down.

1. First, what is the universe?

The universe is everything that exists:

  • Stars
  • Planets
  • Galaxies
  • Black holes
  • Matter
  • Energy
  • Space itself

Our Earth is part of the Solar System. Our Solar System is part of the Milky Way galaxy. And the Milky Way is just one galaxy among hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe.

Now imagine all these galaxies spread across space.

2. What does it mean that the universe is expanding?

Think of a balloon.

Imagine drawing several small dots on its surface. These dots represent galaxies.

As you inflate the balloon, the surface stretches, and the dots move farther apart.

Notice something important: the dots are not necessarily moving across the surface by themselves. The surface between them is expanding.

Something similar happens in the universe.

Space itself is expanding, causing distant galaxies to move farther away from one another.

Scientists discovered this through observations of distant galaxies.

3. Here is where things become mysterious

Scientists originally expected gravity to slow down the expansion of the universe.

Why?

Because gravity attracts objects towards one another.

For example:

  • The Earth’s gravity holds us to the ground.
  • The Sun’s gravity keeps planets in orbit.
  • Galaxies attract one another through gravity.

So scientists expected the universe’s expansion to gradually slow down.

But in 1998, two independent research teams announced something extraordinary.

The expansion of the universe is accelerating rather than slowing down.

In other words, the universe is expanding at an increasingly faster rate.

This discovery shocked the scientific community.

4. So, what is dark energy?

Dark energy is the name scientists give to whatever is responsible for the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Think of it as an invisible influence associated with space itself.

However, there is an important distinction:

Scientists have strong observational evidence that the universe’s expansion is accelerating, but they do not yet fully understand what dark energy actually is.

Nobody has directly captured it in a laboratory.

Nobody knows exactly what it is made of.

Its fundamental nature remains one of the biggest mysteries in physics.

5. Why is it called DARK energy?

The word “dark” does not necessarily mean black or evil.

In science, dark often means something we cannot directly observe or understand through ordinary methods.

For example:

  • Dark matter cannot be seen directly, but its gravitational effects can be observed.
  • Dark energy cannot be seen directly either, but scientists infer its existence from its influence on cosmic expansion.

Dark energy is not simply another name for darkness.

It is a scientific term for a mysterious component of the universe.

6. How much of the universe is dark energy?

This is perhaps the most astonishing part.

According to the standard cosmological model, the universe is approximately composed of:

Component Approximate percentage
Dark energy 68%
Dark matter 27%
Ordinary matter 5%

Ordinary matter is everything we are familiar with:

  • Human beings
  • Animals
  • Trees
  • Water
  • Buildings
  • Stars
  • Planets

Think about that!

Everything we can see, touch and experience makes up only about 5% of the universe’s total energy content.

The remaining 95% is attributed to dark energy and dark matter.

We still have much to learn about both.

7. Is dark energy pushing galaxies apart?

This is where we must be careful.

It is tempting to imagine dark energy as an invisible wind blowing galaxies away from one another.

That is not quite right.

The leading explanation is that dark energy is associated with space itself and influences how space expands.

As space expands, the distances between very distant galaxies increase.

However, dark energy does not necessarily pull apart everything.

For example:

  • It does not make your body expand.
  • It does not make the Earth grow larger.
  • It does not push the Moon away from Earth.
  • It does not cause the Solar System to expand.

Gravity and other forces hold smaller structures together.

Dark energy becomes important mainly when considering the universe on enormous cosmic scales.

8. What happens if the universe keeps expanding?

Scientists have considered several possibilities.

Scenario 1: The Big Freeze

If accelerated expansion continues, galaxies will become increasingly separated.

Eventually, distant galaxies may disappear beyond what we can observe.

Stars will eventually burn out, and the universe could become increasingly cold, dark and empty.

Scenario 2: The Big Rip

If dark energy becomes sufficiently stronger over time, its effects could eventually overcome gravitational and other forces holding structures together.

In an extreme scenario, even galaxies, stars, planets and atoms could be torn apart.

However, this is a hypothetical possibility, not an established prediction.

Scenario 3: Expansion changes

If dark energy behaves differently from what scientists currently expect, the universe’s expansion could change in the distant future.

Scientists are still investigating these possibilities.

9. The biggest mystery: Do scientists really understand dark energy?

Not completely.

In fact, scientists are currently investigating whether dark energy is constant or changes over time.

One leading explanation is called the cosmological constant.

In simple language, this suggests that empty space itself has an inherent energy that drives accelerated expansion.

Other theories suggest that dark energy might be a changing field or that our understanding of gravity needs modification.

Astronomers are conducting increasingly sophisticated observations to investigate these possibilities.

10. Let me give you the simplest possible explanation.

Imagine the universe is a giant balloon.

As the balloon expands, everything on its surface gets farther apart.

Scientists discovered that the universe’s expansion is accelerating.

They call the mysterious phenomenon associated with this acceleration dark energy.

They know its effects are real, but they do not yet know exactly what it is.

And here is the most fascinating part:

The universe is made up largely of things that humanity has not fully understood.

We have explored the oceans, landed on the Moon, sent spacecraft beyond the planets and discovered billions of galaxies.

Yet, when it comes to understanding what makes up the universe, we have only scratched the surface.

One thought-provoking question

If dark energy accounts for approximately 68% of the universe, and scientists still do not fully understand what it is:

How much more is there about our existence that humanity has yet to discover?
