TDThe Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered the mass transfer of 1,332 officers from the Delta State Command in the aftermath of the extrajudicial killing of Mr. Oghenemine Mena Ogidi.

This sweeping directive follows mounting public outrage over the April 26 shooting in Effurun, Delta State, which claimed the life of the young man.

Disciplinary Actions

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid confirmed that the Force Leadership had ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the incident.

  • The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) found that ASP Usman Nuhu acted in gross violation of Force Order 237, governing the use of firearms.
  • His actions were deemed unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect life.
  • The Inspector-General approved the recommendations for dismissal and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
  • ASP Nuhu and his team are already in custody, while two civilians linked to the case remain under investigation.

An autopsy on the late Oghenemine Mena was conducted yesterday, marking a critical step toward establishing the circumstances of his death and ensuring accountability.

Public Concerns

Questions have arisen regarding whether the officers paraded days ago were directly involved in the shooting. Police sources clarified that only ASP Usman Nuhu and two civilians were implicated in the incident.

Despite this, the mass transfer of over 1,300 officers signals a broader effort to restore public confidence and restructure the Delta Command.

Inspector-General’s Assurance

IGP Disu reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial killings and abuse of power, stressing:

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.

“Any officer who violates this principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured Nigerians that justice will be served transparently.

Implications

  • For Delta Command: The mass transfer is one of the largest in recent history, aimed at cleansing the command and restoring discipline.
  • For the Police Force: The move underscores a renewed commitment to accountability and professionalism.
  • For Citizens: The case highlights ongoing concerns about police brutality and the urgent need for reforms to rebuild trust.

The dismissal of ASP Usman Nuhu, the prosecution of implicated officers, and the transfer of 1,332 personnel mark a decisive response by the Police Force to the Effurun tragedy.

As investigations continue, Nigerians await concrete judicial outcomes to ensure that justice for Oghenemine Mena Ogidi is not only promised but delivered.
