TD  Washington, D.C., USA – A Washington, D.C.–based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. has announced that it has finalized a 19-page federal defamation lawsuit against Sahara Reporters and New York author Ademola Wasiu Olalekan Bello.

The firm is seeking $26 million in damages.

It alleges that the publication falsely accused its founder, Dr. Karl Von Batten, of receiving $1.2 million from opposition leader Atiku Abubakar using aliases and fabricated credentials.

Dr. Von Batten stated that after a 16-hour marathon session, the complaint is fully compiled, supported by documentary evidence, and ready for filing in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Firm’s Statement

In a post on X, Dr. Von Batten declared:

“This is Dr. Von Batten.

“We just completed a 16-hour marathon session finalizing our comprehensive 19-page federal defamation lawsuit against @SaharaReporters and Ademola Bello.

“The complaint is fully compiled, supported by extensive documentary evidence, and ready for filing.

“In a few hours, I will personally walk into the United States District Court for the District of Columbia to officially file the lawsuit.”

He added that the time for “online theater” by the Nigerian Presidency was over.

He stressed that the false allegations would now be tested in federal court before a judge.

Alleged Smear Campaign

Von Batten-Montague-York claims the SaharaReporters article is part of a coordinated smear campaign designed to discredit Dr. Von Batten.

The firm also said it was designed to interfere with the firm’s efforts to secure the public release of FBI and DEA records.

Those records concern allegations of heroin trafficking and money laundering involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Chicago during the 1990s.

The case led to a $460,000 civil forfeiture in 1993 on the part of Tinubu.

The firm has been supplying related FOIA documents to the Trump administration and members of Congress, positioning itself as a key player in the transparency push.

Preservation Notice

Ahead of the lawsuit, Von Batten-Montague-York issued a formal preservation notice to Sahara Reporters and Bello, demanding they retain all records related to the disputed articles.

This includes communications, drafts, emails, social media exchanges, and any materials connected to the Nigerian government or Presidency.

The firm emphasized that freedom of the press does not extend to knowingly publishing false statements.

He vowed to hold both the publication and Bello accountable in U.S. federal court.

Legal and Political Context

The lawsuit comes at a politically sensitive time, as Tinubu faces ongoing scrutiny in U.S. courts over FOIA requests for FBI and DEA records.

The firm argues that attempts to smear Dr. Von Batten are linked to efforts to block the release of those records and distract from federal litigation.

Legal analysts note that if the case proceeds, it could test the boundaries of U.S. defamation law in cases involving international political controversies and media outlets reporting on Nigerian politics.

Broader Implications

The dispute underscores the intersection of media freedom, political advocacy, and international litigation.

Sahara Reporters, known for its investigative reporting, now faces the prospect of defending its work in a U.S. courtroom.

Observers say the case could have ripple effects, influencing how Nigerian political figures and their allies engage with American institutions and media.

Meanwhile, it also spotlights the role of lobbying firms in shaping narratives around international transparency and accountability.

Future Outlook

Von Batten-Montague-York’s $26 million lawsuit against Sahara Reporters and Ademola Bello marks a dramatic escalation in the battle over President Tinubu’s contested past.

By moving the dispute into U.S. federal court, the firm has signaled its determination to confront what it views as defamatory reporting head-on.

Meanwhile, it continues its campaign to ensure the release of law enforcement records tied to Nigeria’s president.
