TD Lagos, Nigeria — Nigeria’s economy has been dragged into its most humiliating collapse in modern history under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Fresh figures from the IMF World Economic Outlook, shared by StatiSense, reveal a staggering contraction in Nigeria’s nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The figures exposed the APC’s reckless governance and Tinubu’s disastrous policies.

From Growth to Ruin

Nigeria’s economic trajectory since 1999 tells a damning story.

Under President Olusegun Obasanjo (1999–2006), the economy expanded steadily from $80.9 billion in 1999 to $313.7 billion in 2006.

Goodluck Jonathan’s administration (2010–2014) built on this momentum, pushing GDP to an all‑time high of $811 billion in 2014.

But APC’s reign has been synonymous with decline.

Muhammadu Buhari’s eight years (2015–2022) saw repeated contractions, with GDP falling to $529 billion in 2017 before limping back to $645 billion in 2022.

Tinubu’s tenure has now plunged Nigeria into outright economic humiliation: $487 billion in 2023 collapsed to $252 billion in 2024, the lowest in over two decades.

Tinubu’s Naira Gamble

The sharp decline is primarily driven by Tinubu’s chaotic naira devaluation policy. While real GDP in naira terms has continued to grow at 3–4% annually, the international value of Nigeria’s economy has been gutted. By stripping the naira of stability, Tinubu has effectively halved Nigeria’s global economic standing in just one year.

This reckless gamble has left Nigeria’s economy looking smaller than countries it once dwarfed, undermining investor confidence and eroding the nation’s prestige.

APC’s Legacy of Failure

The APC’s economic record is a litany of broken promises:

  • Under Buhari: Recession, inflation, and a battered currency.

  • Under Tinubu: The worst nominal GDP collapse in Nigeria’s history.

Instead of building on Jonathan’s peak of $811 billion, APC has presided over a steady erosion of Nigeria’s economic strength.

The party’s defenders argue that real GDP growth remains positive, but this is cold comfort when the naira’s collapse has destroyed purchasing power, raised import costs, and impoverished millions.

Public Outrage

Economists and citizens alike have condemned Tinubu’s policies as reckless.

The naira’s freefall has triggered skyrocketing food prices, fuel shortages, and a cost‑of‑living crisis.

Ordinary Nigerians are paying the price for APC’s incompetence, while the government insists the pain is “temporary.”

But the data tells a different story: Nigeria’s GDP under Tinubu is projected to recover only partially to $377 billion by 2026, still less than half of Jonathan’s peak.

Comparing Administrations

Administration Peak GDP (USD) Trend

Administration

Peak GDP (USD)

Trend

Obasanjo (1999–2006) $313B Steady growth
Yar’Adua (2007–2009) $472B Growth, then dip
Jonathan (2010–2014) $811B Historic peak
Buhari (2015–2022) $696B → $645B Decline & stagnation
Tinubu (2023–2026) $487B → $252B Collapse

The contrast is stark: where PDP administrations expanded Nigeria’s global economic footprint, APC has shrunk it.

Conclusion

Tinubu’s presidency has cemented APC’s reputation as the party of economic ruin.

The collapse of Nigeria’s GDP is not just a statistical anomaly — it is a national disgrace.

By devaluing the naira without a coherent safety net, Tinubu has inflicted untold hardship on Nigerians and dragged the country’s global standing into the mud.

As the IMF projections show, even by 2026 Nigeria will remain far below its 2014 peak.

The APC has squandered a decade of opportunity, leaving behind a legacy of contraction, instability, and despair.
