THIS DAWN — Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced the withdrawal of all pending lawsuits he filed against individuals, including Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan, over alleged defamation and slander.

The decision marks a significant shift in tone from Nigeria’s third highest political office holder, who said he was moved by clerical advice during a recent religious service.

Akpabio’s Statement

Speaking on the matter in a video, Akpabio revealed that he had nearly nine cases in court against various individuals who, according to him, had defamed and slandered his name.

He explained that a priest’s sermon prompted deep reflection, leading to his decision to forgive and let go of the legal battles.

“I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me, who slandered my name.

“But I listened to the priest and suddenly realized he was talking to me.

“So, I hereby direct my solicitor to withdraw all lawsuits against them,” Akpabio declared.

Background

The Senate President had previously pursued multiple defamation suits against political opponents and critics, including Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.

These cases had drawn public attention, with many viewing them as emblematic of the tense political climate and the use of litigation as a tool for reputation defense.

Akpabio’s decision to withdraw the suits comes at a time when calls for reconciliation and unity are growing louder across Nigeria’s political landscape.

His move is likely to be interpreted as an effort to de‑escalate tensions and foster goodwill among colleagues and critics alike.

Implications

The withdrawal of the lawsuits could have several implications:

  • Political Atmosphere: It may ease hostilities within the Senate and broader political circles, especially between Akpabio and Senator Natasha.
  • Public Perception: Akpabio’s gesture of forgiveness may bolster his image as a conciliatory leader willing to prioritize unity over personal grievances.
  • Legal Impact: The withdrawal effectively ends ongoing court proceedings, saving time and resources for both parties.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s directive to withdraw nearly nine defamation suits, including those against Senator Natasha, signals a dramatic turn toward reconciliation.

Inspired by clerical counsel, his decision underscores the role of faith and reflection in shaping political actions.

As Nigeria enters 2026, Akpabio’s move may set a precedent for dialogue and forgiveness in a political environment often marked by confrontation.
