TDFormer Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has reaffirmed his commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating unequivocally that he will remain within the party despite recent political realignments.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ihedioha disclosed that over the past year, he and other stakeholders had deliberately worked to build a coalition of “well-meaning Nigerians” under the ADC platform, with a shared objective of delivering accountable governance and fostering national prosperity.
His declaration comes days after former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, announced his defection to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pursue his political ambitions. While expressing a preference for Obi to have remained within the ADC, Ihedioha acknowledged the legitimacy of individual political decisions in a democratic setting.
“I respect his decision and wish him well,” Ihedioha stated, emphasizing that both leaders remain united by a common vision of a better Nigeria that is inclusive, accountable, and reflective of its diversity.
Describing himself as a foundational member of the ADC coalition, Ihedioha noted that the party’s current standing is the result of “painstaking efforts, sacrifice, and strategic alignment.” He stressed that these investments informed his decision to stay.
“After due consultation and reflection over the past 72 hours, I have chosen to remain in the ADC at this time. I take deliberate political steps, and for now, I find no justification to turn my back on the ADC,” he said.
Ihedioha concluded by reiterating that the broader objective of national transformation transcends party lines, encapsulating his position with the phrase: “same objectives, different platforms.”
The development underscores ongoing political shifts ahead of future electoral contests, as key actors reposition across party lines while maintaining overlapping reform agendas.
