TDEnugu State Government has made it compulsory for all 1,260 public schools in the state to participate in the 2027 South East Mathematics Olympiad.
The move hailed as a landmark step in strengthening STEM education across the region.
The recently concluded Olympiad showcased outstanding talents from Imo and Enugu States, with winners carting home millions in prizes and recognition.
Government Directive
- Policy: All public primary and junior secondary schools in Enugu State must now register and participate in the South East Maths Olympiad.
- Scope: Covers 1,260 public schools across the state.
Reacting to the announcement, education advocate, Alex Onyia, praised the Governor for his intentionality.
Confirming that he will meet with principals to ensure compliance, ho posted on his “X” handle,Ā @winexviv:
“I will be meeting with all their principals today to address them.
“This is intentionality and we appreciate the Governor.”

Highlights of the 2027 South East Maths Olympiad
The Olympiad, held in Enugu, attracted over 11,500 students from the five South East states (Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo).
It was structured into three categories: Primary, Junior, and Senior and secondary schools.
Winners & Locations
- Primary Category:
- Winner: Egejurum Onyedikachi ā Diamond Special College, Owerri, Imo State.
- Prize: ā¦2 million.
- Runner-up: Onah Tobit ā Anambra State.
- Junior Category:
- Winner: Onwubiko Chimdiebube ā Evergreen Schools, Enugu.
- Prize: ā¦3 million.
- Achievement: Evergreen Schools produced 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, dominating the category.
- Senior Category:
- Winner: Don-Anele Marvelous Munachimso ā Diamond Special College, Owerri, Imo State.
- Prize: ā¦5 million.
- Additional Recognition: Secured a $100,000 scholarship in Canada.

In the meantime, Onyia seized the opportunity to showcase one of the talents and products of the 2027 South East Mathematics Olympiad,Ā Nkwuaku Adimchimnobi Okemdinachi.
He posted:
“Nkwuaku Adimchimnobi Okemdinachi was a finalist from Ebonyi State for 2026 South East Maths Olympiad.
He scored 354 in JAMB. He also got 98 in maths.
He said the Olympiad pushed him to excellence.
The lowest score I have seen from all Olympiad finalists so far is 347.”
