TDThe long-running leadership tussle within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) took a dramatic turn today as a trial court ruled in favour of the party’s State Chairmen against the Coalition leadership.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge asked the defence counsel whether ADC was organizing a convention.

The lawyer categorically denied that any convention was being planned.

Following this, the court ordered that status quo ante bellum be maintained.

What the Ruling Means

The Latin phrase status quo ante bellum translates to “the state of affairs before the conflict.” In practical terms, the ruling means that:

  • No one should interfere with or tamper with the current ADC state executive committees.
  • The existing state structures remain intact until the final determination of the case.
  • Any attempt to dissolve or replace the state executives would be in violation of the court’s order.

Implications for ADC

This ruling is a significant victory for the State Chairmen, who have been at loggerheads with the Coalition leadership over control of the party.

It underscores the judiciary’s role in stabilizing internal party disputes and ensuring that due process is respected.

Political analysts note that the decision could reshape ADC’s internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

By preserving the authority of state executives, the court has effectively strengthened grassroots leadership, which may influence candidate selection and party strategy.

Reactions

  • State Chairmen: Jubilant over the ruling, they see it as validation of their legitimacy and a safeguard against what they describe as attempts to hijack the party.
  • Coalition Leadership: Though disappointed, they are expected to regroup and possibly appeal the decision.
  • Observers: Civil society groups emphasize that the ruling highlights the importance of internal democracy and adherence to party constitutions.

The court has adjourned further hearings, with another case involving ADC leadership disputes expected to come up shortly.

All eyes remain on the judiciary as it continues to play a decisive role in resolving Nigeria’s increasingly complex intra-party conflicts.

For now, the ruling ensures stability within ADC’s state structures, but the broader leadership battle is far from over.

In the meantime, stay tuned for the Supreme Court ruling on the matter between ADC “chiarman“ and Nafi’u Bala Gombe later in the day.

Stay tuned…
