TDThe African Democratic Congress (ADC) has clarified that its newly elected state executives and other party officers will not assume office until after their formal inauguration scheduled for May 12, 2026.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the announcement in a press statement issued on Friday.
Abdullahi emphasized that the tenure of the newly elected officials will only begin after the expiration of the current executives’ mandate and their official swearing-in ceremony.
The statement underscored that, until that process is completed, all existing executives remain the duly recognized leaders of the party at their respective levels.
This clarification, according to the party, is necessary to prevent confusion and maintain stability within its structure during the transition period.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all existing executives remain the duly recognised officers of the Party until the completion of this constitutional transition process,” the statement read.

The ADC also issued a firm advisory to newly elected officials, particularly at the state level, urging them to refrain from taking any actions or making representations that could be interpreted as prematurely assuming office.
Such actions, the party warned, could violate its constitutional provisions and disrupt internal order.
Observers note that the directive comes amid heightened attention on internal party structures and leadership transitions across Nigeria’s political landscape.
By reiterating its constitutional guidelines, the ADC appears intent on projecting discipline and institutional coherence at a time when party unity is often tested during leadership changes.
The party further reaffirmed its commitment to due process, stating that adherence to its constitution remains central to its operations.
It stressed that the May 12 inauguration date marks a critical point in ensuring a seamless and legitimate transfer of authority.
Political analysts say the move is likely aimed at avoiding parallel leadership claims or factional disputes, which have affected several political parties in the past.
By setting a clear timeline and reinforcing the authority of current officeholders, the ADC is positioning itself to manage the transition without internal conflict.
The ADC concluded by reiterating its dedication to orderliness, discipline, and democratic principles.
It assured members and stakeholders that all processes will be conducted transparently and in line with the party’s constitution.
