TDThe Nigeria Police Force has announced the arrest of one John Cosmos Govi, a chef accused of masterminding a high‑profile robbery in Abuja.
According to the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID‑IRT), Govi faces charges of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, administering harmful substances, malicious damage, and theft.
How the crime unfolded
Investigators revealed that Govi, trained at a catering school in Cotonou, Benin Republic, secured employment as a chef in the targeted residence. He allegedly worked with two accomplices, identified as Peter and Moses, who remain at large.
Police findings show that Govi studied the routine and security structure of the home before striking on 23 April 2026. Food prepared in the residence was reportedly laced with a sedative substance. The drug incapacitated occupants and security personnel.
With the household subdued, Govi allowed his accomplices inside. The gang vandalised the CCTV system, ransacked the apartment, and stole cash along with 20 luxury wristwatches valued at ₦150 million.
Arrest and recovery
Operatives of the FID‑IRT intercepted the suspects while they attempted to flee through the Gwagwalada axis en route to Lagos. During the operation, police recovered an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to the victim and a suspected chemical substance. The substance has been sent for forensic analysis.
Police statement
The Nigeria Police Force emphasised its commitment to tackling organised crime. Authorities pledged that all persons involved in the Abuja robbery would be brought to justice.
The investigation continues as efforts intensify to apprehend the two accomplices still at large.
Broader implications
The case highlights growing concerns about insider threats in high‑value residences. It also underscores the sophistication of criminal networks willing to use sedatives and technology sabotage to bypass security.
For residents of Abuja and beyond, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough background checks and vigilance in domestic employment.
