TDRetired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information and one-time spokesperson for the Nigerian military, has died while in the custody of bandits who abducted him in Katsina State.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday, describing it as a tragic loss to the nation, the state, and the late officer’s family.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the retired general died while being held captive despite efforts by government authorities and security agencies to secure his release.
Health Complications Reportedly Responsible
The state government said Major General Abubakar died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during his period in captivity.
Officials disclosed that extensive efforts had been made by security agencies and the state government to rescue the retired military officer and reunite him with his family.
However, those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the government said, adding that his passing represents a significant loss to the country and the armed forces community.
Abducted Along Katsina–Matazu Road
Major General Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30, 2026, while travelling through Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Reports indicated that armed bandits intercepted their vehicle along the Katsina–Matazu Road and whisked the couple away to an unknown location.
Their driver reportedly escaped the attack despite sustaining gunshot injuries.
The incident sparked widespread concern across Nigeria due to the retired officer’s prominent role in the military and national security communications.
National Outrage and Security Concerns
The kidnapping generated significant public attention, with civil society groups, security stakeholders, and concerned Nigerians calling for urgent action to secure the release of the retired general and his wife.
Before news of his death emerged, reports indicated that a video had surfaced showing the former military spokesperson in captivity, appealing for intervention to secure his freedom.
The incident renewed concerns over the growing threat posed by banditry and kidnappings across parts of northern Nigeria.
Governor Radda Condoles Family
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the family of the late military officer, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting communities across the country.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
He also assured residents that efforts to improve security across the state would continue.
Distinguished Military Career Ends in Tragedy
Major General Rabe Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information between 2015 and 2017 and was widely known as one of the Nigerian military’s most prominent spokespersons.
During his service, he played a key role in communicating military operations and national security matters to the public.
His death in captivity marks another painful chapter in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle against banditry and violent crime.
