TDTragedy struck in the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday morning as a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market, leaving at least five people dead and 10 others rescued alive.

The incident occurred around Gaduwa Estate in the Gudu district, sending shockwaves through the community as residents rushed to the scene.

Emergency responders quickly mobilized, with rescue operations continuing into the afternoon as more victims were believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.

Officials confirmed that teams from the Federal Fire Service, health workers, security agencies, and local volunteers were working tirelessly to evacuate survivors and recover bodies.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as families and onlookers gathered anxiously, hoping for news of loved ones.

Wike’s Intervention

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, visited the site.

Fasawe announced that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had directed that all casualties receive free medical treatment.

The directive was aimed at ensuring immediate care for survivors without financial burden.

Dr. Fasawe commended the swift response of emergency teams and assured residents that the government was committed to supporting victims and preventing future tragedies.

Ongoing Rescue Efforts

As of Saturday afternoon, rescue operations were still underway, with heavy equipment deployed to clear debris.

Authorities warned that the casualty figures could rise as more victims might be trapped. Survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals, where medical teams were placed on high alert.

Community Reaction

Residents expressed grief and frustration, citing concerns about building standards and regulatory oversight.

Some alleged that poor construction practices and disregard for safety regulations may have contributed to the collapse.

Calls for stricter enforcement of building codes have intensified in the wake of the disaster.

Outlook

The collapse adds to a growing list of building-related tragedies in Nigeria’s urban centers, underscoring the urgent need for improved monitoring of construction projects.

For now, the focus remains on saving lives and supporting affected families.

The FCTA has pledged to investigate the incident thoroughly, while Minister Wike’s directive for free medical treatment offers immediate relief to survivors.
