TD WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — US President Donald Trump has announced an immediate ban on three major news organisations — CNN, MS NOW and Politico — from the White House.

President Trump accused the outlets of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news,” “fiction” and “lies” about his administration.

Trump announced the decision on Friday, September 18, 2026, in a post on his Truth Social platform, saying the restrictions were effective immediately.

The announcement represents a significant escalation in Trump’s continuing confrontation with major American news organisations and has already raised questions about press freedom, presidential access and the First Amendment.

Trump Announces Ban

In his Truth Social post, Trump said he was “proud” to announce the ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico, attributing the decision to what he called their constant reporting of “FAKE NEWS.”

He further argued that media organisations should not be permitted to repeatedly publish what he characterised as false reports while covering the president, his administration or the United States.

Trump did not identify particular reports by CNN, MS NOW or Politico that he considered false in the announcement.

He also warned that the action could extend to additional media organisations, writing that “Other Fake News Media Outlets” would follow.

The announcement was subsequently reported by Reuters, CBS News, PBS and other major news organisations.

What does the ban actually mean?

Despite Trump’s declaration that the restrictions were effective immediately, the precise scope and implementation of the ban remained unclear as reports emerged Friday.

It was not immediately established whether the administration intended to revoke the organisations’ White House credentials, exclude their journalists from briefings and presidential events, remove them from the White House press pool, or prevent their reporters from entering the White House complex altogether.

CNN reporters were still working from their White House workspace after Trump’s announcement, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter. CNN personnel were also participating in presidential coverage later that day.

The White House had not immediately provided a detailed explanation of how the announced ban would be implemented.

The distinction is important because access to the White House press facilities, participation in limited-space presidential events and membership of the rotating press pool are not necessarily the same thing.

Why Trump is targeting the three outlets

Trump has maintained a contentious relationship with several major news organisations throughout his political career, frequently accusing media outlets that publish critical reports about him of unfair or inaccurate coverage.

In Friday’s announcement, however, he did not cite a particular story from CNN, MS NOW or Politico as the immediate trigger for the decision.

Instead, he broadly accused the organisations of repeatedly reporting what he characterised as false information about his administration.

The president has also threatened or pursued action against other media organisations during his second term, making the latest announcement part of a broader pattern of disputes between the administration and sections of the US press.

Previous confrontation with the Associated Press

The latest announcement follows the Trump administration’s earlier restrictions against The Associated Press (AP).

In 2025, the administration restricted AP journalists’ access to certain presidential events after the news agency continued using the term “Gulf of Mexico” rather than Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America.”

The AP subsequently challenged the restrictions in court, arguing that the administration’s actions violated constitutional protections for freedom of the press.

A federal judge ruled in April 2025 that the White House had to restore AP’s access to presidential spaces, although subsequent litigation over access to more restricted areas continued.

CNN Has Faced White House Access Disputes Before

CNN has previously been involved in a major legal dispute with the Trump White House over press access.

During Trump’s first presidency, the White House suspended the press credentials of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta following a contentious exchange between Acosta and Trump during a November 2018 press conference.

CNN challenged the decision in court.

A federal judge temporarily ordered the restoration of Acosta’s press access, with the legal dispute eventually ending after the White House reinstated his credentials permanently and CNN dropped its lawsuit.

The earlier case became an important example in the continuing debate over the government’s authority to regulate access for journalists covering the president.

Press-freedom concerns emerge

The announcement immediately triggered criticism from press-freedom advocates.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press said that a ban based on a news organisation’s coverage would raise serious constitutional concerns.

Its president, Bruce D. Brown, argued that once the White House provides access to journalists, excluding particular organisations because the administration dislikes their reporting could constitute viewpoint discrimination.

The organisation said it expected such a restriction to face a legal challenge.

The issue centres on the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

The precise constitutional question, however, can depend on the nature of the access being restricted. The White House regularly operates areas and events with limited capacity, meaning courts have previously considered distinctions between general access and restricted presidential spaces.

Politico Also Singled Out by Trump

Trump’s post included Politico alongside CNN and MS NOW.

The president has previously criticised Politico over its reporting and has separately attacked federal spending on government subscriptions to Politico’s content.

According to reporting by the Courthouse News Service, Trump has accused the Biden administration of spending millions of dollars on Politico subscriptions and has characterised that spending as improper.

Government agencies purchasing subscriptions to news publications, however, have historically been common, and the question of whether such spending was unlawful has been contested.

MS NOW’s inclusion

MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, is also among the organisations named in Trump’s announcement.

The network, like CNN, is a major television news organisation with reporters covering the White House and other federal institutions.

Trump’s decision therefore potentially affects not only individual journalists but established news organisations that have traditionally participated in the White House press operation.

A Developing Constitutional Dispute

The central question now is what happens after Trump’s announcement.

If the administration formally removes the three organisations from White House access, the organisations could challenge the restrictions through the courts.

Such litigation could require a court to examine whether the administration has imposed an unconstitutional restriction based on the outlets’ viewpoints or whether the particular access being denied falls within the government’s authority to manage limited-space presidential events.

The Reporters Committee has already characterised a ban based on dislike of an outlet’s reporting as unconstitutional, while the administration has yet to provide a detailed public legal explanation for the announced restrictions.

Trump Warns More Outlets Could Be Targeted

Trump’s announcement did not stop with CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

His statement indicated that other media organisations could be targeted in the future.

That warning has added to concerns among journalists and press-freedom organisations about whether the administration intends to establish a broader system for restricting access by news organisations whose coverage it considers hostile or inaccurate.

The White House had not, as of the initial reports Friday, identified additional organisations for exclusion.

What happens next?

The immediate next step is likely to depend on how the White House attempts to implement Trump’s announcement.

Among the key questions are:

  1. Whether CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists will have their White House credentials formally revoked.
  2. Whether the organisations will be excluded from presidential press pools.
  3. Whether they will be barred from briefings and limited-space events.
  4. Whether reporters will continue working from their existing White House workspace.
  5. Whether the organisations will challenge the restrictions in federal court.
  6. Whether the administration will extend similar restrictions to other media organisations.

As of Friday evening, reports indicated that the practical scope of the ban remained unclear, even though Trump had described it as effective immediately.

A New Confrontation Between Trump and the US Press

Trump’s decision places the relationship between the White House and major news organisations under renewed scrutiny.

The president maintains that media organisations should not be allowed to publish what he considers false reports about his administration.

Critics, including press-freedom advocates, argue that government access should not depend on whether journalists produce coverage favourable to those in power.

The dispute is therefore likely to move beyond the question of CNN, MS NOW and Politico and into a broader constitutional debate over presidential authority, press access and the First Amendment.

For now, Trump’s announcement is confirmed, but the exact operational and legal consequences of the announced ban remain developing.
