TD Human rights activist and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has reunited with his family in New Jersey, United States, after spending 20 months away from them amid what he described as sustained persecution by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore announced his arrival at his family home in a post shared on Thursday.

He said the prolonged separation had followed a series of legal and administrative actions allegedly targeted at restricting his freedom and movement.

“After 20 long months away from my family, I have finally arrived at our family home in New Jersey,” Sowore stated.

He alleged that the Tinubu administration had deployed different state institutions against him.

It initially involved former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and subsequently the Department of State Services (DSS) under its Director-General, Tosin Ajayi.

Targeted Restriction of Liberty and Movement

According to Sowore, the authorities repeatedly targeted his international passport and subjected him to detention.

They also used court processes and bail conditions that, he claimed, restricted his liberty and movement.

“But we fought back. We resisted. And we prevailed,” he said.

The activist expressed appreciation to his legal team and supporters, particularly lawyers whom he described as “courageous,” as well as comrades who stood by him throughout the legal battles.

“I must express my profound appreciation to the courageous lawyers who remained firm, fearless and astute throughout this battle for freedom, and to our fighter comrades who stood with us every inch of the way,” he said.

Sowore said his return to the United States would also involve visits to several cities across the US and Canada.

There, he plans to engage Nigerians and supporters of his political movement.

Sowore Prioritises 2027 Elections

He, however, said the trip would be temporary, stressing that he intends to return to Nigeria and continue his political campaign on the ground ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I will return soon to continue the #Sowore2027 campaign on the ground,” he declared.

Sowore concluded by insisting that the experiences he described as persecution and abuse of state power had not weakened his political resolve.

“Nothing can stop us.

“No persecution, detention, passport seizure or abuse of state power will extinguish our determination,” he said.

“We are revolutionaries, and we are determined to TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY!”

Sowore is the publisher of Sahara Reporters and a prominent critic of successive Nigerian administrations.

He contested the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections and has continued to campaign for political change ahead of the 2027 election.
