TDThe Nigeria Police Force has announced the tragic loss of seventeen (17) police officers who were killed in a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, in the early hours of May 8, 2026.

According to the official statement, the officers were undergoing specialized operational training at the institution.

Terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the facility at about 1:15 a.m.

The attackers reportedly struck from multiple directions, overwhelming the perimeter defenses.

Several Nigerian Army personnel also lost their lives while bravely repelling the assault.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the fallen officers as courageous patriots who demonstrated exceptional commitment to national security.

He emphasized that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

He noted that they were participating in advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training programs designed to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against insurgency.

“These officers paid the supreme price in service to the nation.

“Their courage and dedication will forever remain honoured by the Nigeria Police Force and the people of Nigeria,” the IGP said.

In a show of solidarity, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, CP Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the Army School on behalf of the IGP.

He commiserated with the Commandant, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, officers of the Nigerian Army, and surviving police trainees.

CP Jibrin praised the resilience of the surviving officers, encouraging them to remain resolute in completing their training in honour of their fallen colleagues.

The Police Force assured Nigerians that it is working closely with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to track down and bring the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

The IGP reiterated that the fight against terrorism remains a top priority and that the sacrifices of the fallen officers will serve as renewed motivation to intensify operations against insurgents.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by terrorist groups in Nigeria’s northeast.

Both the military and police continue to face deadly assaults despite sustained counter-insurgency campaigns in the region.

The Nigeria Police Force concluded its statement by saluting the courage, sacrifice, and service of the fallen officers.

It pledged that their dedication to duty will forever be remembered by the nation.
