TDThe family of Michael Oyedokun, the schoolteacher gruesomely killed by bandits in captivity on Sunday, has appealed to the public to stop sharing graphic videos of his murder.
The family described the circulation as “deeply traumatising.”
Oyedokun was among several teachers abducted on Friday from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
His killing has sparked outrage nationwide, but his family says the repeated sharing of disturbing footage has compounded their grief.
In a statement released this week, the family expressed gratitude for the sympathy and support shown but pleaded for restraint.
“We sincerely appeal to the public and media platforms to kindly reduce or stop sharing the graphic videos and pictures of our beloved uncle.
“The continuous circulation of those videos and images has been deeply traumatizing for us as a family,” the statement read.
The family noted that Oyedokun’s children are currently writing exams, making the period especially difficult.
They stressed that the elderly and younger relatives have been emotionally distressed by the constant resurfacing of the videos on social media.
“For the sake of our mental and emotional wellbeing, we humbly ask that if it is necessary to post about the incident, please kindly blur the videos or images, or make use of the pictures officially released by the family instead,” the statement added.
The family concluded by thanking Nigerians for their prayers, love, and support during what they described as an unimaginably painful time.
