Why is Nigerian politics so frequently associated wiTDth juju, occult rituals, fortune-tellers, secret societies, marabouts, blood oaths and allegations of human sacrifice?

This is not a foolish question, and dismissing the entire subject as superstition will not make it disappear. Ritual killings occur in Nigeria. Human remains have been discovered.

Suspects have confessed to seeking body parts for charms or supposed “money rituals.” Police have arrested traditional practitioners, pastors, fraudsters and their clients. Politicians have also been credibly associated with secret oath-taking at shrines.

However, intellectual honesty requires an important distinction: ritual murder is documented, and political oath-taking is documented, but it is seldom proved in court that a particular politician commissioned a human sacrifice to win an election.

Allegations are not convictions. Nigeria’s failure to investigate such claims properly is precisely what keeps suspicion alive.

THE POLITICS OF THE SHRINE IS REAL

The most revealing documented example is the Okija shrine scandal in Anambra State.

In 2004, police raided a complex of shrines at Okija and found dozens of corpses, skulls and human remains. Thirty-one people were reportedly arrested after the discovery of 83 bodies—63 of them headless—and approximately 20 skulls.

The discovery produced sensational claims of ritual murder. Later investigation suggested that many of the bodies had probably been brought to the forest after death rather than murdered inside the shrine. That qualification matters.

But another fact was established: powerful businessmen and senior political figures had visited the shrine and sworn oaths there.

Historian Stephen Ellis concluded that Okija exposed an informal political system in which institutions believed to possess powers of life and death could enforce agreements that Nigeria’s courts and political institutions could not.

The shrine reportedly kept registers of visitors and payments. It served as a clandestine court, debt collector and instrument of intimidation. Cambridge University Press: “The Okija Shrine—Death and Life in Nigerian Politics”

The political logic is brutally simple. A godfather spends money and manipulates an election for a candidate.

Because neither participant trusts the law—or each other—the candidate is forced to swear a terrifying spiritual oath promising loyalty and repayment. The shrine becomes an illegal enforcement agency for a corrupt political contract.

That is not democracy. It is government by fear.

WHY POLITICIANS SEEK SUPERNATURAL POWER

Nigerian politics is extraordinarily expensive, violent and winner-takes-all. Public office can provide access to contracts, appointments, security protection and enormous state resources. Losing an election can mean financial ruin, prosecution, exile or political extinction.

In such an environment, desperate and morally empty people will use anything they believe might give them an advantage:

  • Money to purchase party nominations.
  • Thugs to intimidate voters.
  • Police officers to suppress opponents.
  • Election officials to manipulate results.
  • Judges to preserve disputed victories.
  • Prophets, diviners, shrines and fortune-tellers to promise supernatural protection.
  • Blood oaths to prevent political associates from betraying them.
  • The supernatural becomes another political weapon.

Politicians consult spiritual advisers because they are frightened. They fear losing elections, exposure, betrayal, assassination, prosecution and death. A man who has stolen his way into power cannot sleep peacefully because he assumes everyone surrounding him is as treacherous as he is.

The shrine promises certainty in a country where the institutions provide none.

HUMAN SACRIFICE AND “MONEY RITUALS”

There is no scientific evidence that killing a human being can produce money, electoral victory, invincibility or political power. None whatsoever.

What exists is murder, mutilation, fraud and psychological manipulation.

The belief remains deadly because criminal practitioners convince clients that blood or human body parts can transfer life, wealth, protection or power. Vulnerable people—especially children, women, people with disabilities and socially isolated individuals—can consequently become targets.

A Canadian government research review found extensive reports of ritual killings in Nigeria involving human body parts intended for charms, potions and supposed supernatural benefits.

A later review warned that these crimes are generally prosecuted simply as murder, making them difficult to count separately. It also recorded concerns that powerful people could sometimes interfere with investigations. Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada report and 2021 follow-up review

But poverty alone does not explain it. Poor Nigerians are not naturally murderous, and traditional African religion is not synonymous with human sacrifice. The real poison is the marriage of desperation, greed, superstition and impunity.

When unexplained wealth is worshipped, people begin searching for supernatural explanations. When a penniless politician suddenly acquires mansions, convoys and private jets, some Nigerians conclude that he must have used “juju.”

The more likely explanation is usually corruption, patronage, stolen public money or organised crime.

Mysticism can therefore become a convenient disguise for ordinary criminality.

DO NOT CONFUSE RELIGION WITH MURDER

Nigeria must also be careful with language.

“Juju” is often used carelessly to describe indigenous religious practices ranging from legitimate ancestral worship and healing traditions to criminal rituals. They are not the same thing.

A marabout, properly understood, may be a respected Muslim scholar, teacher or spiritual guide. Calling every marabout an occult criminal insults legitimate Islamic traditions.

In the same way, a traditional priest is not automatically a murderer, just as a pastor is not automatically a fraudster because fraudulent pastors exist.

The crime begins when any religious or spiritual authority demands blood, body parts, sexual abuse, forced confinement, poison, money obtained by deception or obedience to an illegal political conspiracy.

Murder is murder, whether the perpetrator is wearing a suit, cassock, turban or traditional robes.

NOLLYWOOD DID NOT INVENT THE FEAR

Nigerian films have certainly amplified the popular image of politicians and wealthy businessmen acquiring power through human sacrifice. Social media now spreads every rumour within minutes.

But Nollywood did not invent political corruption, unexplained corpses, shrine oaths or ritual killings. It converted existing anxieties into entertainment.

The danger is that fiction and fact become mixed together. Every mysterious death is labelled a ritual murder.

Every successful politician is accused of occult membership. Innocent people can be attacked over accusations of witchcraft, while the real perpetrators of documented murders disappear behind political protection.

Sensationalism without prosecution protects criminals rather than exposing them.

THE GREATEST ACCOMPLICE IS IMPUNITY

Why do these beliefs survive in the twenty-first century?

Because Nigeria investigates badly, prosecutes selectively and forgets quickly.

Bodies are discovered. Suspects are paraded before television cameras. Politicians issue statements. Newspapers publish frightening headlines. Then the case disappears.

Where are the forensic reports? Where are the complete lists of victims? Where are the financiers? Where are the clients who allegedly requested the human body parts? Where are the court judgments?

The poor herbalist or messenger may be arrested, but the wealthy customer allegedly seeking power is rarely identified.

That pattern teaches society a terrible lesson: powerful people are untouchable.

Nigeria does not need another committee or another sermon. It needs a specialised national investigative unit combining homicide detectives, forensic pathologists, financial investigators, cybercrime experts and prosecutors.

Every discovered body part must be DNA-tested. Missing-person records must be connected nationally. Investigations must follow the money and identify the person who commissioned the crime—not merely the person caught carrying a skull.

Political parties should be required to expel any official convicted of organising ritual violence, kidnapping, cult activity or illegal oath-taking. Police officers who suppress such investigations must face prosecution.

Most importantly, Nigeria must stop treating unexplained wealth as evidence of divine favour. A mansion without a legitimate source of income is not a miracle. It is an invitation to investigate.

BALLOTS, NOT BLOOD

Any politician who believes that killing an innocent human being will deliver electoral victory is not fit to govern a village, much less a state or nation.

Human sacrifice cannot produce power. It produces a corpse, a grieving family and a murderer.

Blood oaths cannot create loyalty. They create frightened conspirators.

Fortune-tellers cannot repair failed hospitals, generate electricity or create employment. Marabouts cannot replace public policy. Shrines cannot substitute for independent courts. Prophecy cannot count votes.

Nigeria’s political darkness survives because too many people benefit from secrecy, fear and silence.

It will end only when every suspicious death is investigated, every victim is named, every financier is exposed and every guilty person—however wealthy, religious or politically connected—is prosecuted publicly.

A country governed by law does not require politicians to consult the dead before serving the living.

Nigeria must choose: the ballot box or the blood altar; democratic accountability or government by terror.

The two cannot coexist.
