THIS DAWN — The Super Eagles of Nigeria have advanced to the knockout stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a flawless record, securing nine points from three matches after defeating Uganda 3–1 in their final Group C clash.
Dominant Display in Fes
The match, held at the Complexe Sportif de Fès on December 30, saw Nigeria deliver a commanding performance despite already securing qualification prior to kickoff.
Head coach Eric Chelle rotated his squad, handing the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen and showcasing the team’s depth and tactical flexibility.
Paul Onuachu opened the scoring in the 28th minute, converting a well-placed cross from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The goal marked Onuachu’s first international strike in four years, a moment of redemption for the forward.
Onyedika’s Second-Half Brilliance
Raphael Onyedika, who was part of Chelle’s reshuffled lineup, stole the spotlight in the second half.
He netted twice within six minutes—first in the 62nd minute with a composed finish through the goalkeeper’s legs after a pass from Samuel Chukwueze, and again in the 67th minute following a slick cutback from Chukwueze.
Uganda, reduced to ten men after goalkeeper Salim Magoola was sent off for handling the ball outside the box, struggled to contain Nigeria’s attacking rhythm.
Substitute Rogers Mato managed to pull one back for the Cranes in the 75th minute, but it was too little, too late.
Group Stage Perfection
With this win, Nigeria topped Group C with maximum points, having previously defeated Tanzania and Tunisia.
The Super Eagles scored seven goals and conceded only two across the group stage, underlining their status as one of the tournament’s most balanced and dangerous sides.
This marks the fourth time Nigeria has completed a perfect group stage run at AFCON, following similar feats in 1992, 2006, and 2022.
Next Challenge: Knockout Round Awaits
Nigeria will face one of Mozambique, Cameroon, or Ivory Coast in the Round of 16, scheduled for Monday in Fes.
The team’s momentum, squad depth, and tactical discipline position them as strong contenders for the title.
Coach Chelle praised his players’ composure and adaptability, noting that the team’s ability to rotate and still dominate reflects the strength of the squad.
“We’re building something special,” he said post-match. “But we must stay focused—AFCON is never predictable.”
Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda capped a dominant group stage campaign at AFCON 2025.
With nine points, a potent attack, and a resilient defense, the Super Eagles head into the knockout rounds unscathed and full of confidence.
As the tournament intensifies, all eyes will be on Nigeria to see if they can convert their early form into continental glory.
