A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, has been killed by Boko Haram following a deadly insurgent attack on a military base in northeastern Nigeria.

The incident marks a significant blow to ongoing counterterrorism operations in the region.

Brig. Gen. Braimah, who served as Commander of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai, was reportedly killed during a coordinated assault by suspected Boko Haram fighters.

The attack targeted military formations in Benisheikh and Ngamdu communities within Kaga Local Government Area, a region long affected by insurgency.

According to multiple military and local sources, the incident occurred late on Wednesday, April 8.

Heavily armed Boko Haram insurgents had launched simultaneous offensives on strategic positions in Benisheikh and Ngamdu.

The attackers reportedly overwhelmed parts of the brigade’s defenses after intense exchanges of gunfire.

Eyewitnesses Confirm the Boko Haram Attack

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the military base in Benisheikh was set ablaze by Boko Haram during the confrontation.

The confrontation resulted in the destruction of several operational assets, including vehicles and equipment.

The scale of the damage is yet to be officially assessed.

Brig. Gen. Braimah was said to have died in the line of duty alongside a number of soldiers during the fierce battle.

Sources also confirmed that the brigade’s Imam was among those killed, highlighting the heavy toll of the attack on personnel.

Despite the losses, reports suggest that troops mounted resistance and succeeded in neutralizing several of the insurgents during the firefight.

However, the full extent of casualties on both sides remains unclear.

Army Keeps Mum Over the Incident

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Nonetheless, confirmations from multiple credible sources within the military and the local community have reinforced the authenticity of the development.

The Boko Haram attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Borno State.

Military forces continue to confront insurgent groups in the region despite years of sustained operations.

Analysts note that such coordinated assaults point to the resilience and evolving tactics of extremist factions operating in the region.

The Boko Haram Menace

Security experts have called for renewed strategic measures, improved intelligence gathering, and enhanced support for frontline troops to counter the ongoing Boko Haram threat.

The death of a high-ranking officer like Brig. Gen. Braimah is expected to prompt further review of operational frameworks within the theatre.

The incident adds to growing concerns over the stability of northeastern Nigeria.

It also highlights the need for sustained national and regional efforts to combat insurgency effectively.
