TD A social media post by Mike Arnold has sparked fresh speculation about President Bola Tinubu’s health and his decision to remain in Lagos instead of returning to Abuja following his return from a four-week stay in Europe.
Arnold called on investigative journalists in Lagos to examine what he described as a “lead” concerning the President’s movements in the city.
However, Arnold expressly acknowledged that the claims were not established facts, saying they represented a pattern that he believed warranted investigation.
Tinubu Returns After Four Weeks Abroad
President Tinubu left Abuja on August 30 for what the Presidency initially described as a three-week annual vacation in Europe.
According to the State House, he first travelled to London before proceeding to Paris, where he held several engagements, including a private dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron and meetings with business figures.
The Presidency subsequently extended the President’s stay by several days.
Tinubu eventually returned to Nigeria on September 29, arriving in Lagos from Paris.
Channels Television reported that the presidential aircraft arrived at the presidential wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 6:22pm.
The report also said journalists at the airport were barred from taking visuals of the President’s arrival.
The Presidency said Tinubu chose Lagos as his first destination to participate in activities honouring the late MKO Abiola, including a film premiere scheduled for October 1.
It also said he would hold strategic meetings with political associates ahead of the 2027 elections before returning to Abuja.
Health Speculation Resurfaces
Arnold’s post linked the President’s extended stay abroad and subsequent Lagos schedule to previous health rumours.
Those rumours have circulated publicly for months, but there is no verified evidence in the material reviewed for this report establishing that Tinubu has cancer or is receiving cancer treatment.
Indeed, when Tinubu returned to Lagos on September 29, he was asked about concerns over his health.
The President rejected the speculation, saying he was “healthy, sound, and ready to go.”
“Rumour will always be emanating from politics, but the facts remain, I’m here,” Channels Television quoted him as saying.
The Presidency has also previously dismissed claims concerning the President’s health as baseless.
Why Marcelle Ruth Cancer Centre Was Mentioned
Arnold’s post specifically named the Marcelle Ruth Cancer Centre & Specialist Hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, and suggested that journalists should investigate whether the President was receiving treatment there.
The hospital is a genuine specialist cancer facility.
Its official website says it provides cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment, and lists Dr. Modupe Elebute-Odunsi as its founder and chief executive officer.
The centre also operates a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator for radiotherapy.
Independent reporting similarly describes the facility as a specialist cancer centre established by Elebute-Odunsi, who trained and worked extensively in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria.
However, the existence and capabilities of the hospital do not establish that President Tinubu is a patient there.
No evidence establishing such treatment was identified in the sources reviewed for this report.
Post Calls for Observation of Hospital and Presidential Movements
Arnold’s post went further by urging journalists to watch for security activity, presidential convoy movements and possible changes to hospital appointments.
He also suggested examining corporate records and monitoring whether foreign medical specialists arrived in Lagos.
However, such activities could involve patients and medical staff who have no connection to the President.
Medical treatment is also protected by privacy considerations.
Information about an individual’s medical condition or treatment should not be inferred from the presence of security personnel, vehicles or appointments at a hospital.
Arnold himself acknowledged that he was not alleging wrongdoing by the hospital or its founders.
“If a president is being treated there, that’s lawful medical care,” he wrote, adding that he believed the issue was “concealment, not the clinicians.”
Hospital’s Founder’s Background
Public information confirms that Elebute-Odunsi has extensive experience in oncology and haematology.
According to her official profile, she qualified in medicine from the University of Lagos in 1986.
She was subsequently trained in medicine and haemato-oncology in London, including at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, St George’s Hospital and The Royal Marsden.
The Marcelle Ruth Foundation describes her as the founder and CEO of the cancer centre and notes her fellowship qualifications from the Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists.
Public reporting has also established that her parents, Professor Emmanuel and Professor Yade Elebute, were prominent medical practitioners who later established Lagoon Hospitals.
These facts, however, do not establish any connection between the hospital and President Tinubu’s medical care.
Social Media Exchange Turns Heated
The post triggered criticism from some social media users.
One user, @truth4evry1, questioned the ethics of attempting to investigate a public figure’s private medical care.
“If it was true, don’t you have the decency to respect someone’s privacy and safety?” the user asked.
He described the proposed investigation as dangerous and irresponsible.
Arnold responded with highly critical political language directed at Tinubu.
He said that he would continue pursuing the matter until what he described as his desired political and social outcomes were achieved.
Mike Arnold replied :
“He’s an evil tyrant. He deserves all the shame, scorn, and ridicule that can be heaped upon his festering head.
“He lives in luxury on the backs of the downtrodden, while innocent displaced widows and orphans starve to death in the middle of the FCT.
“I will not stop until either they are restored, or he’s living in a shanty next to a sewage ditch. He deserves it, they don’t.”
His response was an expression of his personal political opinion and does not constitute evidence of the health claims contained in the original post.
