TDFrench prosecutors, assisted by Europol, have raided the Paris offices of X (formerly Twitter), owned by multibillionaire businessman, Elon Musk.

The raid was part of a sweeping criminal investigation into the platform’s operations and its handling of artificial intelligence–driven content.

The searches were led by the Paris public prosecutor’s cybercrime unit.

It was focused on allegations that X’s AI chatbot and recommendation systems may have facilitated the spread of unlawful material.

These include:

  1. sexually explicit deepfakes,
  2. extremist propaganda, and,
  3. Holocaust denial content.

Investigators reportedly seized documents and electronic evidence.

The seizure was to assess whether the company’s moderation practices and AI tools contributed to systemic failures in curbing harmful content.

Scope of the Investigation

  • AI scrutiny: Authorities are examining X’s generative AI chatbot, Grok

There are widespread concerns that it has been used to amplify disinformation and harmful imagery.

  • Content moderation: The probe is also targeting whether X’s algorithms prioritize engagement over safety, thereby enabling the circulation of extremist material.
  • Leadership accountability: French prosecutors have summoned Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for voluntary interviews scheduled in April.

The invitation signaled that the inquiry could extend to the highest levels of the company’s leadership.

European Context

This raid is part of a broader European crackdown on global tech platforms.

Regulators across the EU have intensified enforcement of digital safety laws, particularly under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The Act requires platforms to swiftly remove illegal content and demonstrate transparency in their algorithms.

Europol’s involvement highlights the cross-border nature of online harms and the EU’s determination to coordinate enforcement across member states.

Implications for X

  • Legal exposure:

Depending on the findings, X could face fines, operational restrictions, or mandated changes to its AI and moderation systems.

  • Regulatory precedent:

The case may set a benchmark for how European authorities handle AI-driven platforms accused of enabling harmful content.

  • Public trust:

The raid underscores growing skepticism about X’s ability to balance free expression with user safety.

The tension has defined the platform since Musk’s takeover.

Next Steps

Musk and Yaccarino’s voluntary appearances before French prosecutors will be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of the case.

The European Commission is expected to monitor the investigation closely, potentially launching parallel inquiries under EU law.

The raid could embolden regulators in other jurisdictions to pursue similar actions against X and other platforms deploying generative AI.

This development marks one of the most significant confrontations yet between European regulators and a global tech giant over AI governance.

The outcome will not only determine X’s future in Europe but may also influence the global debate on accountability for AI-driven platforms.
