The reported redeployment of Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi to head Electoral Operations at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has triggered public debate ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The development attracted attention on social media after NEC redeployed the wife of political figure Segun Showunmi to the commission’s sensitive electoral operations department.
According to reports published on October 13, Adeyemi-Showunmi previously served as Administrative Secretary at INEC’s Lagos office.
She would later be assigned to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Gummi Moved to Voter Registry Department
The reported personnel change also involved Isah Magaji Gummi.
Gummi had previously headed Electoral Operations and was reportedly redeployed to the Voter Registry Department.
The changes have prompted questions about the reasons behind Gummi’s transfer and the criteria used to select Adeyemi-Showunmi for the position.
The Electoral Operations Department plays a central role in election preparations.
This includes coordinating logistics, deploying election materials and supporting operational arrangements for national polls.
Its responsibilities make the department particularly important as INEC prepares for the 2027 general elections and the management of sensitive electoral processes.
Political Activities of Showunmi Fuel Debate
Segun Showunmi is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and previously served as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 presidential campaign.
He has also publicly expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, a position that has intensified scrutiny of his wife’s reported assignment.
Human rights lawyer Chidi Anselm Odinkalu questioned the redeployment in a post on X on October 18, reacting to reports about the appointment.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has also urged INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan to explain the reported changes and address concerns about possible conflicts of interest.
HURIWA clarified that its concerns did not establish that Adeyemi-Showunmi had acted improperly, but focused on the potential effect on public confidence.
The association called for disclosure of the criteria guiding the appointment and safeguards against political considerations influencing the management of sensitive electoral responsibilities.

Current Political Status of Segun Showunmi
Segun Showunmi (also known as Otunba Segun Showunmi or Sowunmi) is currently a PDP chieftain in Ogun State and Convener of The Alternative Movement, while actively serving in President Bola Tinubu’s APC Presidential Campaign Council.
As of mid-October 2026:
He was named a member of the Media and Strategic Communication Directorate (also described as the Communication and Strategy Committee) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
This appeared in a revised membership list around October 13, 2026.
He has publicly accepted the appointment, thanked Tinubu, Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and others involved, and declared strong support for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
He cites the administration’s economic reforms, improved state finances, and the need for policy continuity as his reasons.
He continues to be identified in reports as a PDP figure and leader of The Alternative Movement, even while working on the APC campaign side.
This reflects a cross-party realignment rather than a formal defection in the available reports.
Previously, he served as a key spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaigns (including 2023).
He has recently warned that he would expose “skeletons” about Atiku or other opponents if politically attacked over his current stance.
In short, Showunmi remains linked to the PDP and his Alternative Movement platform.
He is, however, now an active participant in Tinubu’s APC campaign media/strategy team, publicly advocating for the president’s re-election on grounds of continuity and reform.
This dual positioning has drawn significant attention in Nigerian political discourse.

INEC Yet to Publicly Clarify the Redeployment
Journalists had attempted unsuccessfully to obtain official comments from INEC’s publicity officials concerning the personnel changes.
An unnamed senior commission source reportedly described internal postings as routine administrative decisions, while suggesting that some accounts of the changes were inaccurate.
However, the source reportedly provided no detailed explanation, leaving questions about the specific reasons for the redeployment unresolved.
As of the reports cited here, INEC had not publicly provided a detailed explanation of the redeployment or the criteria used in assigning the department’s leadership.
Concerns About Impartiality and Public Confidence
The controversy centres largely on whether the reported appointment could create a perception of political influence within an institution expected to administer elections impartially.
Critics argue that transparent explanations are particularly important when personnel changes affect departments responsible for critical electoral logistics and operational coordination.
Other perspectives caution against assuming wrongdoing solely because an official’s spouse holds political views or supports a presidential candidate.
No verified evidence cited in the reports establishes that Adeyemi-Showunmi has interfered with electoral operations or that the redeployment has altered election procedures.
The central question therefore concerns transparency, institutional safeguards and whether INEC can demonstrate that professional considerations guided the personnel decision.
Showunmi: Calls for Transparency Ahead of 2027 Rage
The reported redeployment has added to wider demands for INEC to explain changes in key departments and demonstrate the procedures governing sensitive appointments.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has separately called for greater disclosure concerning reported personnel changes and arrangements for producing, printing and safeguarding sensitive election materials.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, INEC’s response to these concerns may influence public understanding of its internal decisions and election-readiness measures.
For now, the redeployment remains a subject of political and institutional debate, while allegations of bias or operational interference remain unproven.
This Dawn News will continue to follow developments and report any official clarification from INEC.
