Kogi Police Investigate Fatal Shooting of Two Officers at Ajaokuta

The Kogi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a fatal shooting involving two serving police officers at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of the state.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, claimed the lives of Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi.

In a statement issued on Sunday, October 25, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said preliminary findings indicated that Corporal Yusuf, who was on night duty, shot his female colleague before shooting himself.

According to the police, the incident was reported at approximately 11:04 p.m., prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ajaokuta to lead a team of officers to the scene.

Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths.

Their remains were subsequently deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.

The command disclosed that an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene as exhibits.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for an in-depth investigation.

Relationship Dispute Allegedly Preceded Shooting

According to the source, the officers had reportedly been in a romantic relationship for several years but began experiencing disagreements in recent months over trust issues and allegations of infidelity.

The source alleged that their disagreements escalated into physical confrontations and threats.

The source further claimed that the officers had previously been detained following their disputes.

He added that a senior officer, identified as the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), had advised them to end the relationship to prevent further conflict.

The account also alleged that Yusuf, who was assigned to night-duty station guard, resumed duty at about 6 p.m. before allegedly leaving his post and proceeding to Onimisi’s quarters.

These details, including the alleged history of threats, previous detention and the precise motive for the shooting, have not been independently established.

The Kogi State Police Command has not publicly confirmed the alleged relationship dispute or the claims concerning previous confrontations between the officers.

Police Caution Against Speculation

The police said the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the motive behind it remained subjects of investigation.

The command stressed that it would not speculate on matters yet to be established by investigators and assured the public that verified updates would be provided as appropriate.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.

The deaths of the two officers have raised questions about the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting.

These include the events preceding the incident and the allegations of earlier disagreements.

The ongoing SCID investigation is expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
