The Nigeria Police has announced sweeping disciplinary measures following the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State.

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, has drawn national outrage and international condemnation.

Many describe it as a chilling example of extrajudicial execution carried out in broad daylight.

Police Disciplinary Action

In response to the public outcry, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordered the immediate withdrawal of all officers connected to the incident from the Delta State Command.

They were transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they faced expedited disciplinary proceedings.

The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) reviewed the case and concluded that ASP Nuhu Usman, the principal officer involved, acted in flagrant violation of Force Order 237.

The cited law governs the use of firearms by police officers.

The committee found his conduct unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath sworn to protect life and uphold the law.

The FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.

The IGP approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

Once administrative procedures are finalized, the officers will be handed over to judicial authorities for criminal prosecution.

Official Police Statement

DCP Anthony Okon Placid, Force Public Relations Officer, underscored the seriousness of the decision:

“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.

“Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.”

The IGP extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Ogidi, acknowledging the deep pain caused by the incident.

He assured them that justice would not only be served but would be seen to be served, reinforcing public confidence in the institution’s commitment to accountability.

Public Assurance

Aliyu Giwa, New Media Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, echoed the determination of the leadership:

“Justice for Mene Ogidi is no longer a promise; it is now actively underway.

The officers involved will be dismissed and prosecuted. Accountability is being pursued without exception.”

This statement was intended to reassure Nigerians that the Force is treating the matter with utmost seriousness, particularly in light of the disturbing video evidence that sparked widespread anger.

Wider Implications for Nigerian Police

The swift disciplinary action is seen as a critical step in restoring public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.

The institution has long faced criticism over cases of brutality and abuse of power.

Analysts note that the decision could help avert potential unrest, as the video had raised fears of renewed protests similar to the EndSARS movement of 2020.

The movement was driven by anger over police misconduct.

Human rights advocates have welcomed the move but insist that beyond prosecution, systemic reforms are needed to prevent future abuses.

They argue that training, oversight, and accountability mechanisms must be strengthened to ensure that officers adhere strictly to professional standards.

Future Outlook of Nigeria’s Policing

The dismissal and prosecution of the officers involved in the Effurun shooting mark a watershed moment in Nigeria’s policing history.

By acting decisively, the Force leadership has signaled a zero-tolerance approach to extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.

For the family of Mene Ogidi, the tragedy remains immeasurable, but the assurance of justice offers a measure of solace.

For the wider public, the case underscores the urgent need for transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law as the foundation of trust between citizens and security institutions.

Justice for Mene Ogidi is now firmly on course.

The Nigeria Police has pledged that this case will serve as a turning point in its commitment to discipline and professionalism.
