TD Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has disowned a purported letter circulating on social media in his name and allegedly addressed to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe.

Obi said the document was fake, malicious and fabricated to mislead the public, adding that the signature attached to it was also forged.

Obi: “The document is entirely false”

In a disclaimer published on Saturday, September 19, Obi said he became aware of the document circulating online and immediately rejected its purported authorship.

He said the letter, which purportedly concerned political and financial issues in Anambra State, did not originate from him:

“This document is entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.”

Obi further stated that the signature appearing on the document was “completely forged” and urged Nigerians and media organisations not to give the publication credence.

What the fake letter claimed

The disputed document was dated September 19, 2026, carried the heading “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak”, and was presented as a letter from Obi to the Onitsha monarch.

It was purportedly issued under a “Movement Obi/Kwankwaso 2027” heading and identified its supposed author as Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and NDC presidential candidate.

The letter purportedly discussed the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Obi’s former administration and questions surrounding Anambra State’s financial records and liabilities.

It called for financial records to be made available for examination and urged that political disagreements over the state’s finances be resolved through documents, evidence and transparency.

Appeal to traditional rulers and Igbo leaders

The purported correspondence also contained an appeal to traditional institutions, political leaders and elders to promote unity and prevent political disagreements from becoming divisions among the Igbo people.

It portrayed the issues surrounding Anambra’s finances as matters that should be addressed in the interest of future generations rather than through political accusations and counter-accusations.

However, Obi has expressly denied writing or signing the document.

Comes amid Anambra financial controversy

The fake-letter controversy comes against the backdrop of an ongoing public disagreement over the financial position of Anambra State and claims concerning liabilities allegedly inherited from previous administrations.

Recent reports have documented exchanges involving the Soludo administration and Obi over the state’s finances and the records of Obi’s tenure as governor. Vanguard reported that Obi has challenged claims that his administration left unpaid salaries, pensions or obligations to contractors for completed projects.

The purported letter appeared to address that controversy, making its apparent authorship potentially significant. But Obi’s disclaimer means its statements should not be attributed to him.

Obi urges public to disregard document

Obi said his attention remains focused on national development and accountability rather than what he described as fabricated publications.

“I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication.”

He added that his focus remained on “issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people,” rather than what he called “cheap fabrications.”

As of publication, there was no indication from the available reports that the person or group responsible for creating and circulating the disputed letter had been identified.

The document should therefore be treated as unauthenticated and not as a genuine communication from Peter Obi.
