THIS DAWN — The Labour Party has formally welcomed the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as consistent with earlier endorsements and a step toward building a broad coalition for national renewal.

In a statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party recalled that it had already given its blessings to Obi’s participation in the ADC coalition as far back as May 26, 2025. The party reiterated that its support was reaffirmed on July 3, 2025, following the official unveiling of the ADC.

Continuity of Support

The Labour Party emphasized that Obi’s formal entry into the ADC does not represent a rupture in relations. Instead, the party assured members nationwide that it has not withdrawn the initial support extended to Obi. “There is no cause for alarm,” the statement read, stressing that the party remains committed to reclaiming Nigeria’s democracy from entrenched interests bent on foisting a one‑party system on the nation.

The leadership acknowledged that Obi’s anticipated exit leaves a void but pledged that statutory organs of the party will convene to chart a fresh and sustainable course. “We are confident that the fortunes of the party will be revitalised in no time,” the statement added.

Rebuilding and Revalidation

The Labour Party highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen its structures, pointing to the membership revalidation and registration exercise currently underway. According to the party, the exercise is already yielding positive results, injecting new energy and enthusiasm into its ranks.

Despite recent defections, the party expressed optimism that it will return stronger, better organized, and more focused. “Even as the party works assiduously to fill the void created by the recent wave of defections, we reassure our members that the Labour Party will return stronger,” the statement noted.

Leadership and Vision

Under the interim leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, the Labour Party pledged to continue offering Nigerians a credible, people‑centered alternative to what it described as the “rudderless government” of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The party insisted that it remains guided by principles of integrity, inclusiveness, and accountability.

“We further assure the Nigerian people that the Labour Party, under the able and visionary leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, will continue to do what is right and offer Nigerians a credible and people‑centred alternative to the APC’s rudderless government in 2027,” the statement declared.

Hope for 2027

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party expressed confidence that “there is light at the end of the tunnel.” It urged Nigerians to sustain their faith in democracy despite the despair and hopelessness imposed by the current administration.

“With collective resolve and renewed determination, it shall indeed be better come 2027,” the party assured, positioning itself as a rallying point for citizens seeking change.

A Call to Democracy

The statement concluded with a New Year message to Nigerians, particularly lovers of democracy. The Labour Party appealed to citizens to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic values, even in the face of challenges.

“As we wish all lovers of democracy a prosperous New Year, the Labour Party appeals to Nigerians to continue to sustain their faith in democracy,” the party said.

Conclusion

Peter Obi’s defection to the ADC marks a significant political realignment, but the Labour Party’s response underscores its determination to remain relevant and resilient. By reaffirming its earlier support for Obi, while simultaneously charting a new course for its own future, the party seeks to balance continuity with renewal.

The Labour Party’s message is clear: despite defections and challenges, it remains committed to offering Nigerians a credible alternative in 2027. With renewed energy from its membership drive and the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, the party is positioning itself to play a decisive role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic future.
