TD Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democracy Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has visited an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The visit followed the reported blockage of his delegation from proceeding to Yelwata in Benue State.

Obi made the visit on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, after his delegation was prevented from reaching Yelwata to meet displaced Nigerians and families affected by recent attacks.

According to Obi, he subsequently travelled to Mangu, where he visited an IDP camp accommodating more than 500 displaced persons.

Reflecting on the plight of displaced Nigerians, Obi said more than 45,000 people had reportedly been displaced from over 20 communities following terrorist attacks.

He described the situation as deeply disturbing, stressing that the affected residents were Nigerians.

He said that all they wanted was to return to their ancestral communities, rebuild their homes, cultivate their farms and resume their lives in peace and dignity.

“As I have always maintained, as long as there is one displaced Nigerian, all Nigerians are displaced,” Obi said.

The former governor called on the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure communities affected by violence.

He urged the government to restore the confidence of residents forced to flee their homes.

He said the government had a responsibility to protect the lives, safety, dignity and livelihoods of all Nigerians, regardless of their location, ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.

Obi also urged authorities to create the necessary conditions for displaced citizens to return safely and with dignity.

He demanded provision of security and support to enable them rebuild their communities and livelihoods.

“Our displaced citizens must not become forgotten Nigerians,” he said.

Obi described them as citizens whose homes, livelihoods and futures had been disrupted by insecurity.

He concluded the visit by offering what he described as modest support to displaced families.

He said that the gesture was intended to demonstrate solidarity, compassion and shared humanity.

Photos from the visit showed Obi interacting with large crowds at the IDP camp.

He was captured holding a baby and waving to displaced residents.

The visit came amid renewed concerns over insecurity and the growing humanitarian consequences of attacks on communities in parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

Obi said the Nigeria he envisions must be a country where citizens can live, work, farm, raise their families and pursue their aspirations in peace and security.

“A New Nigeria is POssible,” he concluded.
