The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has raised concerns over a planned peaceful protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council, scheduled to take place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.

Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

The police acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly but warned of potential threats to public safety.

“While the Command respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, intelligence reports indicate plans by proscribed groups and other non-state actors to infiltrate and hijack the protest,” Adeh stated.

The Command emphasized that such infiltration could pose a serious risk to public peace, lives, and property.

It urged the NLC organizers to consider rescheduling the protest to avoid any breakdown of law and order.

Security Concerns

The warning comes amid heightened tensions in the capital, where recent protests have occasionally been marred by violence and disruption.

The police say they are acting proactively to prevent any escalation and to ensure that lawful activities across the FCT are not jeopardized.

“In the interest of public safety, the FCT Police Command has advised the organizers to consider rescheduling the protest,” the statement read.

The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding all lawful activities and maintaining peace across the territory.

Appeal for Cooperation

SP Adeh called on residents to continue cooperating with security agencies, stressing that collective vigilance is essential to keeping the FCT safe and secure.

The NLC protest, which is expected to draw attention to workers’ rights and economic grievances, has not yet been officially postponed.

However, the police advisory may prompt a reassessment of logistics and timing by the organizers.

As Abuja braces for the planned demonstration, the FCT Police Command’s advisory serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between civil liberties and public safety.

Whether the protest proceeds as scheduled or is rescheduled, authorities and organizers alike will be under pressure to ensure that the event remains peaceful and free from external interference.
