TD ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Federal Government of Nigeria has yet to respond to the urgent demand of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which issued a 14-day ultimatum to facilitate the hearing of an appeal filed by its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, or face 2027 election boycott.

IPOB had warned that failure to do so could trigger a boycott of the 2027 general elections across the South-East and other areas it identifies as Biafraland.

The ultimatum was contained in a video statement by Mazi Chris Nwaogu, recently appointed head of IPOB’s Directorate of State.

14 Days Ultimatum to Boycott 2027 Election in the South East

In the video, Mazi Nwaogu had presented the proposed election boycott as a firm position rather than an immediate threat.

He said the ultimatum is subject to the government’s response to Kanu’s pending appeal.

According to the statement, IPOB wants the Federal Government and the relevant authorities to ensure that Kanu’s appeal is listed and heard within 14 days.

“The country that rushed to convict is now too frightened to defend the conviction.

“We are giving them 14 days … to hear Onyendu’s appeal,” Nwaogu said in the video.

He warned that if the authorities failed to act, IPOB would review its petitions.

It may go ahead and boycott the forthcoming elections “across Biafraland and beyond.”

“Nigeria, you have 14 days,” he added.

Nwaogu also made reference to the Eastern Security Network (ESN), stating that IPOB had been funding the group and would continue to do so.

Kanu’s Appeal at Centre of Dispute

The ultimatum centres on the legal battle involving Kanu.

Kanu was convicted on terrorism-related charges in November 2025 and sentenced to life imprisonment, alongside other terms.

He remains in detention in Sokoto while his legal team pursues an appeal.

His family and IPOB have repeatedly raised concerns over what they describe as delays in the processing and listing of the appeal filed in February 2026.

An analyst commenting on the development questioned why Kanu’s appeal had remained pending.

He argued that the delay could fuel perceptions of collusion against the IPOB leader.

The analyst said the situation had become particularly significant following the latest warning from the head of IPOB’s Directorate of State.

Head of IPOB Directorate of State, Mazi Chris Nwaogu, threatened that failure to hear the appeal filed by IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, within fourteen days could trigger a boycott of the 2027 general elections across "Biafraland"

Election Boycott Sparks Debate

The proposed boycott has also generated debate among some Igbo stakeholders and commentators.

Critics, meanwhile, warn that staying away from the ballot could ultimately weaken the political influence of voters in the South East.

Some have argued that a widespread boycott could reduce opposition turnout in the region.

That, in turn, will inadvertently benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates in the 2027 elections.

A former lawyer associated with IPOB has also reportedly criticised the idea.

He argued that an election boycott could suppress voter participation rather than advance the political interests of the region.

The controversy, therefore, places IPOB’s demand over Kanu’s appeal alongside a broader debate.

The issue affects political participation, voter turnout and the strategic consequences of an election boycott in the South East.

FG Yet to Respond

As of the time of reporting, there has been no response from the Federal Government to IPOB’s 14-day ultimatum in the material provided.

The development is likely to intensify scrutiny of Kanu’s ongoing legal proceedings.

It may also shine the light on the potential political implications of IPOB’s boycott call ahead of the 2027 elections.

If the proposed boycott is implemented, its impact would depend largely on the extent to which voters across the South East and other areas identified by IPOB respond to the directive.

This Dawn News will continue to monitor developments surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s appeal, IPOB’s ultimatum and the potential implications for the 2027 elections.
