TDRecent reports and opposition statements have accused governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of diverting billions of naira from FAAC allocations to finance President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar both alleged that over ₦800bn meant for public welfare projects was redirected into political accounts.

The Allegations

ADC Statement claimed APC governors used FAAC allocations to fund Tinubu’s campaign, describing the move as “shameless, cruel and criminal.”

Atiku Abubakar accused Tinubu and APC governors of colluding to funnel public resources into “dedicated accounts” for campaign purposes.

Media Reports suggested governors secretly agreed to monthly deductions from FAAC allocations.

The allocations are allegedly managed by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, under platforms like Renewed Hope Ambassadors and Renewed Hope Network.

Internal Crisis

The allegations triggered a split within the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF).

Some governors demanded accountability from Uzodimma, who reportedly claimed the funds had already been spent.

Governors from Kwara and Ogun openly rebelled, declaring Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah as a new PGF chairman.

President Tinubu was forced to intervene personally, brokering a fragile truce and allegedly ordering partial refunds and accountability measures.

Government Position

At the moment of this publication, the APC-led federal government has not confirmed the diversion of funds.

Officially, FAAC allocations are constitutionally meant for salaries, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social welfare.

No statement has also acknowledged Liquefied Natural gas (LNG) proceeds being distributed as campaign funds.

Why It Matters

  • Public Trust: Allegations of misusing FAAC allocations undermine confidence in governance.
  • Economic Impact: Nigerians face rising food prices, insecurity, and poor infrastructure despite record allocations to states.
  • Political Fallout: The controversy risks weakening APC unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

Fact-Check Verdict on Alleged ₦700 Billion LNG funds

The claim that Tinubu distributed ₦700 billion LNG funds to APC governors has been alleged to be false framing as allegations concern FAAC allocations (over ₦800 billion), not LNG funds.

No verified evidence supports the allegation that Tinubu personally gave money away to governors.

Amidst the unverified allegations by opposition parties and media reports, government has denied any wrongdoing.

In conclusion, the narrative of “₦700 billion LNG funds gifted to APC governors” is, so far, found wanting.

What exists are unverified allegations of FAAC fund diversion for political purposes, which have sparked internal APC disputes and opposition criticism.

What has been reported is that opposition figures and media outlets allege APC governors diverted over ₦800 billion from Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds to support Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.

These funds were not officially declared as LNG proceeds nor confirmed by government sources.

The allegations remain unverified, though they have sparked political controversy and internal disputes among APC governors.
