THIS DAWN — Nigeria was shaken on December 29, 2025, by news of a tragic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua.

The crash claimed two lives and left Joshua with minor injuries.

In the aftermath, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued a deeply personal condolence message to Joshua, expressing sympathy and solidarity.

The governments of Ogun and Lagos States, alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), also released official statements confirming the incident and outlining ongoing investigations.

Tinubu’s Condolence Message

President Tinubu’s message to Joshua was both heartfelt and symbolic, reflecting the national pride Joshua embodies as a two-time unified world heavyweight champion.

Addressing him directly as “AJ,” Tinubu wrote:

“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries. This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season.”

Tinubu praised Joshua’s courage, discipline, and love for Nigeria, describing him as a source of national pride. He urged unity and mutual support during difficult times, adding:

“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny. I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”

The President’s words underscored the gravity of the tragedy while reaffirming Joshua’s symbolic role as a unifying figure for Nigerians worldwide.

Joint Statement by Ogun and Lagos Governments

The governments of Ogun and Lagos States confirmed Joshua’s involvement in the accident, which occurred when the vehicle carrying him and three others collided with a stationary truck.

Two passengers died instantly, while Joshua and another survivor were evacuated to a specialized medical facility in Lagos.

Doctors have since confirmed that Joshua is stable, conscious, and in communication with his family.

The statement emphasized that both state governments are closely monitoring the situation, ensuring the victims receive the best possible medical care.

It also conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased and requested privacy for Joshua and his family during this difficult time.

The governments pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, highlighting their commitment to road safety and accountability.

FRSC’s Account of the Accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) provided detailed information about the crash.

According to preliminary findings, the Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua was suspected to be traveling above the legal speed limit when it attempted an overtaking maneuver.

The vehicle lost control and collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The FRSC confirmed that five adult males were involved: two died, one sustained injuries, and two escaped unhurt.

Joshua was rescued alive with minor injuries.

The deceased were transported to Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, while Joshua and the injured survivor were taken for medical treatment.

FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three minutes of notification, conducting swift rescue operations, traffic control, and preventing secondary crashes.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished Joshua a speedy recovery.

He reiterated warnings against excessive speed and dangerous overtaking, noting that such violations remain leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.

Broader Implications

The accident highlights persistent challenges on Nigeria’s highways, particularly the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest corridors.

Despite ongoing safety campaigns, excessive speed, wrongful overtaking, and poor enforcement continue to contribute to high fatality rates.

Joshua’s involvement in the crash has drawn global attention, given his stature as a world-renowned athlete.

The incident underscores the need for stronger road safety measures, better infrastructure, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

It also serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, even for celebrated figures.

The tragic accident involving Anthony Joshua has cast a somber mood across Nigeria, claiming two lives and injuring one of the nation’s most iconic sports figures.

Tinubu’s condolence message was coupled with official statements from Ogun and Lagos States and the FRSC.

It reflects the gravity of the incident and the collective grief of the nation.

As investigations continue, the tragedy serves as a call to action for improved road safety and stricter adherence to traffic laws.

For now, Nigerians unite in mourning the deceased, praying for Joshua’s recovery, and reaffirming the importance of solidarity in times of adversity.
