THIS DAWN — President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new immigration measures, declaring a permanent pause on migration from what he termed “Third World Countries”.

President Trump directed U.S. authorities to reevaluate all green cards issued to nationals of 19 countries designated as “of concern.”

The announcement, made on Thanksgiving Day via Trump’s Truth Social account, followed a deadly shooting near the White House.

The shooting involved a 29‑year‑old Afghan national who attacked two National Guard members, killing one.

Trump linked the incident to failures in immigration vetting, pledging to overhaul the system.

“I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover,” Trump wrote.

He added that his administration would pursue “reverse migration” to deport individuals he described as “non‑compatible with Western Civilization.”

Hours later, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) confirmed a full-scale review of green cards issued to immigrants from 19 countries flagged for heightened security concerns.

The list includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Burundi, Chad, Republic of Congo, Cuba, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Laos, Libya, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Yemen.

Interestingly, Nigeria is not among the countries identified. See the table below:

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the review was ordered directly by the President.

Edlow stressed that the move was necessary to “restore confidence in America’s immigration system” and ensure that individuals granted permanent residency meet national security standards.

The dual measures mark one of the most far-reaching immigration policy shifts in recent U.S. history.

Supporters argue the steps are essential to protect national security and prevent future attacks.

Meanwhile, critics warn the steps could trigger diplomatic fallout and face constitutional challenges.

Immigration advocates also condemned the use of the term “Third World Countries,” calling it outdated and stigmatizing.

The policy is expected to impact thousands of immigrants already living in the United States and could reshape future migration flows.

Analysts note that the reevaluation of green cards may lead to revocations or stricter residency requirements for nationals of the listed countries.

As preparations begin for implementation, the announcements have reignited debate over America’s immigration priorities.

It also balanced national security concerns with humanitarian obligations and international partnerships.
