TDPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Tunji Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police after dismissing IGP Kayode Egbetokun
The announcement, confirmed by presidency and police sources, marks a major shake-up in Nigeria’s security leadership.
Egbetokun was asked to resign during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa.
His tenure had been controversial, especially after Tinubu extended his service beyond the statutory retirement age of 60.
Senior officers reportedly welcomed the move, citing morale and efficiency concerns.
Tunji Disu, formerly head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, becomes Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police.
He is widely respected for professionalism and reform-minded leadership, with a track record in tackling organized crime and strengthening investigations.
His appointment is expected to usher in reforms focused on accountability, modernization, and restoring public trust.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP in June 2023 and confirmed in October 2023.
His tenure coincided with rising insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes.
Critics argue he failed to deliver promised reforms, while supporters say systemic challenges limited his impact.
Analysts suggest Disu’s appointment could inject fresh energy into the police force and align with Tinubu’s broader governance renewal agenda.
The move highlights the delicate balance between political authority and institutional independence in Nigeria’s security architecture.
