TDNigeria’s academic pride shines once again as three outstanding students from the South East have been officially invited to compete in the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome, Italy.
The competition will take place from July 2–8, 2026.
This prestigious event will bring together the brightest young minds from 153 countries.
The opportunity will offer a global platform for innovation, problem-solving, and intellectual excellence.
The Champions
The trio of champions who emerged victorious at the South East Maths Olympiad are:
- Egejurum Onyedikachi
- Onwubiko Chimdiebube
- Don-Anele Munachimso
Their remarkable performance in mathematics and STEM disciplines earned them the coveted invitation.
It positioned them as Nigeria’s flagbearers in one of the most competitive academic contests worldwide.
Voices of Confidence
Education advocate Alex Onyia, who announced the news on his social media handle, expressed optimism about their chances:
“I’m confident that they will bring back the Gold medals from each category. We will shine on the world stage.”
Onyia emphasized that the students will not be alone as their teachers will accompany them.
That will ensure that they receive mentorship, guidance, and moral support throughout the competition.
The journey to Rome, however, comes with significant financial requirements.
The total cost of the trip—including registration fees, flights, accommodation, tours, and logistics—is estimated at £32,200.
This figure underscores the need for public and private sponsorships.
It also beckons for support from government agencies, philanthropists, and corporate organizations committed to advancing education.
Why It Matters
This opportunity is more than just a competition—it is a milestone for Nigerian education. It demonstrates the intellectual capacity of young Nigerians and the potential of the South East region to produce world-class talent. Their participation will:
- Showcase Nigeria’s academic excellence on a global stage.
- Inspire other students to pursue STEM disciplines with determination.
- Highlight the importance of investing in education as a driver of national development.
Global Context
The International STEM Olympiad is renowned for its rigorous standards, testing students in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology.
Competing against peers from across the globe, the Nigerian team will not only represent their country but also demonstrate Africa’s growing influence in global academic competitions.

As preparations intensify, all eyes are on Onyedikachi, Chimdiebube, and Munachimso.
Their journey symbolizes hope, resilience, and the promise of a brighter future for Nigerian youth.
Whether they return with gold medals or not, their participation alone is a victory—proof that Nigerian students can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the world.

The inaugural South East Maths Olympiad drew over 11,500 students on March 7, 2026.
Winners like Egejurum Onyedikachi from Imo State took N2 million, while the senior champ from Diamond Special College in Owerri claimed N5 million.
Onyia, CEO of Educare, now plans to raise stakes to over N70 million total.
That will be including N10 million for the senior winner, matching teacher awards, and N100,000 for all 45 finalists.
Community members cheered the push to make the South East Africa’s education hub, though some raised concerns about sustainability and prize gaps between first and second place.
