THIS DAWN — The Residents of Tidibale Town in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State are fleeing for dear lives after a reported ultimatum given to them by notorious bandit, Bello Turji.

Bello Turji had ordered residents to vacate the town after launching violent raids and issuing threats to dominate the area.

The violent raid forced people to flee for safety.

Background on Bello Turji

Bello Turji is a notorious bandit leader operating in northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Sokoto and Zamfara States.

He has been linked to mass killings, kidnappings, and extortion.

Despite reports of his death in late 2025, Turji resurfaced in January 2026 with renewed attacks, demonstrating his continued influence and capacity to terrorize communities.

Why Residents Were Ordered to Leave Tidibale

  • Direct Threats:

Turji and his men invaded Tidibale village in Isa Local Government Area and reportedly gave residents 24 hours to vacate their homes.

They delivered the ultimatum during a night raid, accompanied by violence.

  • Assertion of Control:

Security experts noted that Turji’s actions were part of a broader plan to dominate much of the district, including Tidibale and nearby villages like Bargaja.

  • Fear and Panic:

Residents reported that Turji personally killed several people before issuing the evacuation order.

The order triggered mass panic and forcing families to abandon their homes.

  • Strategic Expansion:

Analysts believe Turji is attempting to establish territorial control over agrarian communities, using forced displacement to weaken resistance and consolidate his authority.

Impact on Residents

  • Mass Exodus:

Videos shared online showed hundreds of residents fleeing Tidibale, carrying belongings on foot and in overloaded vehicles.

  • Government Response:

The Sokoto State Government confirmed the evacuation, acknowledging that Turji’s threats had made it unsafe for villagers to remain.

  • Humanitarian Crisis:

The displacement has worsened insecurity in Sokoto.

It added to Nigeria’s already severe internal displacement crisis caused by banditry and insurgency.

Broader Implications

Turji’s mandate to vacate Tidibale reflects the weakness of state authority in rural northern Nigeria, where bandit leaders often wield more power than local governments.

His actions highlight:

  • The failure of security operations to neutralize him despite repeated military campaigns.
  • The growing boldness of bandit groups, who now openly issue directives to entire communities.
  • The risk of further territorial expansion, as Turji seeks to dominate Isa LGA and beyond.

In summary:

Bello Turji mandated residents to vacate Tidibale Town as part of his violent campaign to assert control over Sokoto’s Isa district.

His threats, killings, and raids forced villagers to flee, with the state government confirming the evacuation for safety reasons
