THIS DAWN — A bomb explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, has claimed about five lives and left several others injured.

Vice President Kashim Shettima has condemned the attack, describing it as a despicable assault on innocent citizens and reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve to defeat terrorism.

Tragedy in Maiduguri

Residents of Maiduguri were thrown into mourning on Wednesday after a bomb detonated inside a mosque at Gamboru Market during morning prayers.

Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as worshippers scrambled for safety amid the blast.

At least five people were confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.

Emergency responders rushed victims to nearby hospitals, and security forces immediately cordoned off the area to prevent further attacks.

The incident marks yet another grim reminder of the persistent threat of terrorism in Nigeria’s North East.

Insurgent groups have repeatedly targeted places of worship, markets, and vulnerable communities in the region.

Vice President Shettima’s Remarks

Vice President Kashim Shettima has strongly condemned the attack.

His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha

“This despicable assault on innocent citizens and the peace of the nation will not break Nigeria’s resolve.

“The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation.

“Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately,” Shettima declared.

Shettima revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had ordered an immediate intensification of security operations in Borno State, with additional tactical teams deployed to track down those responsible.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s security architecture would not only apprehend the perpetrators but also unravel the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“We sympathize with the Government of Borno State, residents, and families who have lost their loved ones in this attack.

“The Federal Government is confident that those responsible for this despicable act of terrorism will face the full weight of the law,” he added.

Government’s Commitment to Security

The Vice President reiterated that the Tinubu administration’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and stability remains unwavering.

Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu has consistently emphasized national security as a constitutional duty.

“We will continue to provide our security agencies with all necessary resources and support to decisively defeat terrorism in all its forms,” Shettima affirmed.

He further noted that the Federal Government is working closely with state authorities and local security agencies.

He expressed hope that they will protect vulnerable communities and critical infrastructure across the North East and other regions.

Community Impact

The Gamboru Market mosque bombing has left the Maiduguri community shaken. Survivors described the attack as “inhuman” and “cowardly,” lamenting that worshippers were targeted during prayers. Religious leaders in Borno have called for unity and resilience, urging citizens not to succumb to fear.

Local organizations have also appealed for increased vigilance and community policing to complement government efforts.

Many residents expressed frustration that despite years of counterterrorism operations, insurgents continue to strike at soft targets.

Broader Context

Borno State has long been the epicenter of Nigeria’s battle against insurgency. While military operations have reduced the frequency of large-scale attacks, sporadic bombings and ambushes remain a threat. Analysts warn that terrorist groups may be attempting to reassert influence by targeting symbolic locations such as mosques and markets.

The attack underscores the challenges facing Nigeria’s security forces, who must balance offensive operations with protecting civilians. It also highlights the need for sustained investment in intelligence gathering, community engagement, and rehabilitation programs for affected populations.

Conclusion

The Gamboru Market mosque bombing is a tragic reminder of the human cost of terrorism in Nigeria. With five lives lost and many more injured, the incident has reignited calls for stronger security measures and community resilience. Vice President Kashim Shettima’s condemnation and assurances reflect the government’s determination to confront the threat head-on.

As Maiduguri mourns, the nation watches closely to see whether intensified operations will bring justice to the victims and restore confidence in Nigeria’s fight against terror.
