Nigeria and Ethiopia have reached a prisoner transfer agreement that will allow 136 Nigerian inmates currently serving prison sentences in Ethiopia to be transferred home to complete their jail terms.

The development was facilitated by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as part of ongoing diplomatic engagements between both countries aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and addressing the welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad.

Under the agreement, the affected inmates will be repatriated to Nigeria, where they are expected to continue serving the remainder of their sentences under the supervision of Nigerian correctional authorities.

Relief for Families Seeking Information

The announcement has generated widespread interest among families and friends of Nigerians incarcerated in Ethiopia.

Many of them have had limited information about the condition and whereabouts of their loved ones.

Officials familiar with the arrangement noted that the transfer process is intended to promote humanitarian considerations while ensuring that justice and legal obligations are respected in both countries.

Observers say the agreement could provide much-needed relief to families who have struggled with the financial and emotional burden of maintaining contact with relatives detained thousands of kilometres away.

Strengthening Consular Protection

The prisoner transfer arrangement forms part of broader efforts by the Nigerian government to enhance consular protection for its citizens overseas.

Such agreements are commonly used by nations to allow convicted citizens to serve their sentences closer to home, enabling easier family visitation and facilitating rehabilitation and reintegration.

Diplomatic sources indicate that the agreement followed extensive negotiations between Nigerian and Ethiopian authorities, culminating in a framework that satisfies the legal requirements of both countries.

136 Nigerians Listed for Transfer

According to information released in connection with the agreement, a total of 136 Nigerian inmates have been identified for transfer from Ethiopian correctional facilities to Nigeria.

The list includes inmates from various states across Nigeria, reflecting the diverse backgrounds of Nigerians who found themselves entangled in legal troubles abroad.

Families have been encouraged to verify whether their relatives’ names appear on the published list.

For many, the inclusion of a loved one’s name serves as confirmation that the individual remains alive and is currently within the Ethiopian prison system.

Reactions and Expectations

The agreement has attracted praise from Nigerians who view it as a demonstration of active diplomatic engagement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Analysts note that successful implementation of the transfer arrangement could serve as a model for similar agreements with other countries where Nigerians are serving prison sentences.

Human rights advocates have also welcomed the initiative.

They argue that proximity to family members often contributes positively to inmates’ welfare, mental health, and eventual rehabilitation.

As preparations for the transfer continue, attention will now focus on the logistical and legal processes required to move the inmates from Ethiopia to Nigeria and integrate them into the Nigerian correctional system.

Government officials are expected to provide further details regarding the timeline, transportation arrangements, and procedures that will govern the transfer of the 136 inmates in the coming weeks.

The Nigerian-Ethiopian prisoner transfer agreement marks one of the most significant recent consular achievements between the two African nations and underscores the growing emphasis on protecting the interests and welfare of citizens beyond national n.
