TDThe Nigeria Police Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The ratification paved the way for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
Council Meeting and Endorsement
The endorsement was made during a council meeting held at the State House, presided over by President Tinubu.
The session was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and senior government officials including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Present also were National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam.
Others are Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Esther Didi Walson Jack.
The appointment follows the resignation of former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Commendations from Leaders
Several leaders praised Disu’s track record and professionalism:
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State commended Disu’s exemplary service as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021.
Governor Sanwo-Olu noted his recognition for excellence in crime control.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State described the appointment as a reflection of Disu’s outstanding career record.
Minister Nyesom Wike, who worked with Disu during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in the FCT Command, lauded his efficiency in crime fighting and strategic impact on security in the capital.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment.
Career Background
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.
Over the years, he has held critical operational, investigative, and strategic command positions nationwide.
His career highlights include:
- Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Rivers State.
- Officer in Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Rivers State.
- Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State.
- Commissioner of Police, FCT Command.
- Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and Force CID Annex, Lagos.
Next Steps
Disu has also acquired multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, reflecting his commitment to modern, knowledge-driven policing.
Disu will be formally sworn in during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday.
His appointment marks a new chapter for the Nigeria Police Force, with expectations that his leadership will strengthen crime prevention and enhance public trust in law enforcement.
