THIS DAWN — Governor Alex Otti has unveiled a groundbreaking transportation initiative in Abia State, introducing the first batch of electric buses to provide free rides for residents during the festive season and beyond.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Otti announced that 20 electric buses will begin operations immediately.
Meanwhile, a total of 100 units is planned for the initiative.
The remaining 80 buses are expected to arrive in Abia next year.
Otti commits to inclusivity
He emphasized that the service will be free of charge until January, underscoring his administration’s commitment to inclusivity.
The governor also revealed that his administration had arranged free buses in Abuja and Lagos.
The free rides will help Abians to return home for the holidays.
Otti said: “We have provided free buses for Abians in Abuja and Lagos to convey them home.
“By tomorrow, we will be launching the first batch of 20 electric buses.
“In total, we are rolling out 100 units, with the remaining 80 arriving in Abia next year.
“From now until sometime in January, these electric buses will be free of charge for everyone in Abia.
“And let me be clear: once you live or do business in our state, you are Abian, we do not discriminate based on state of origin,” Otti declared.
This, he said, further demonstrating his focus on welfare and accessibility.
A Partnership with Innovation
The buses were supplied by Coscharis Motors, marking the first delivery of electric buses to any Nigerian state.
During an inspection, the CEO of Coscharis, Dr. Cosmas Maduka, highlighted the advanced features of the vehicles.
This includes rear and interior cameras for enhanced security, passenger charging ports, and data systems designed to improve safety.
“These buses are specially made. As you enter, you are captured and recorded.
“The days are gone when you enter the bus and start picking pockets,” Dr. Maduka explained.
He added that the buses are designed to run during the day and recharge overnight, powered by solar energy infrastructure being developed in Abia.
This ensures independence from Nigeria’s unreliable national grid and allows the buses to operate for up to two days on a single charge.
Otti Boosts Tourism and Safety
Officials believe the initiative will not only modernize public transport but also boost tourism by making Abia safer and more attractive to visitors.
“Abia State with this bus will lead in tourism because they try to keep Abia safe where people can come in and have the same comfort like it’s done in the UK,” the Coscharis CEO noted.
Governor Otti’s electric bus rollout represents a bold step toward sustainable transport and improved public welfare.
By combining innovation, inclusivity, and environmental consciousness, Abia State is positioning itself as a leader in modern infrastructure and citizen-focused governance.
