Tinubu Sends 3 Ambassadorial Nominees for Confirmation
President Tinubu has formally transmitted the names of three non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation, THIS DAWN has learnt.
This marks the administration’s first major step toward restoring Nigeria’s diplomatic representation abroad after a prolonged vacancy across several missions.
The nominees are Kayode Are (Ogun State), Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa State), and Ayodele Oke (Oyo State).
They were announced on Wednesday during plenary, where Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out the president’s letter to lawmakers.
The nominations have been referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, with directives to conclude its screening and report back within one week.
Observers criticise
This move marks a significant development, as it comes more than two years after Tinubu recalled Nigeria’s entire diplomatic corps in 2023.
The move left numerous embassies and consulates without substantive ambassadors.
The prolonged delay has attracted criticism from foreign-policy observers who argue that the absence of ambassadors weakened Nigeria’s global visibility, limited high-level diplomatic engagement, and impaired services to citizens abroad.
According to reports, the nominees are the first batch, with the presidency expected to send additional names in the coming weeks.
The Senate President hinted that further nominations would follow as part of a broader restructuring of Nigeria’s foreign missions.
Government officials have described the nominations as a step toward reinvigorating Nigeria’s diplomacy.
It’s also expected to strengthen foreign relations and restoring administrative leadership at embassies that have operated under chargé d’affaires since 2023.
Analysts say the confirmation of ambassadors is expected to:
- improve consular services,
- re-energise Nigeria’s participation in multilateral engagements, and,
- help drive foreign-policy priorities that have stalled due to leadership gaps.
