TDThree separate explosions rocked Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, this evening, Monday, March 16, 2026.

The blasts struck areas around the Monday Market, the Post Office area, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital precincts.

Shortly after dusk, three blasts occurred at distinct locations across the city.

The incidents are reported to have affected the busy Monday Market, the commercial Post Office district, and the vicinity of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Details about the devices used or the precise sequence of events remain unconfirmed at this time.

Emergency response

Security forces and emergency responders were immediately reinforced to the affected areas.

Military and police units, alongside local emergency services, have been deployed to secure scenes, assist victims, and carry out initial assessments.

Hospitals in the city have been placed on heightened alert to receive casualties and to treat the injured.

Public safety measures

Authorities have begun cordoning off the blast sites and are urging residents to avoid the affected areas to allow emergency teams to operate.

Commuters are advised to expect road closures and traffic diversions in central Maiduguri while security checks and forensic examinations are carried out.

Official information and investigation

A full statement from security agencies is expected as investigations continue.

Officials have not yet released a consolidated casualty figure or identified suspects.

Investigators are working to determine whether the blasts were coordinated and to establish motive and responsibility.

What to expect next

  • Ongoing security operations at the three sites.
  • Forensic and bomb‑squad examinations to determine the nature of the explosives.
  • Official briefings from security agencies and hospital authorities with casualty and situational updates.

Residents are urged to follow updates from verified government and emergency channels, to report suspicious activity to security forces, and to prioritise safety by staying clear of cordoned areas.

Further details will follow as authorities release verified information.

Stay tuned…
