THIS DAWN — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has categorically refuted reports circulating in some quarters that it has released the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election.
In a statement signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the Commission described the reports as “false and misleading,” stressing that no timetable has been issued for the upcoming polls.
INEC’s Position
INEC emphasized that it operates strictly within the provisions of the law.
Citing Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, the Commission noted that it is mandated to publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.
“Any timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot emanate from INEC,” the statement read.
The Commission assured Nigerians that the official Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election will be released in due course, in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC further pledged that when the timetable is ready, it will be communicated through the Commission’s established and verified channels to ensure accuracy and transparency.
Warning Against Fake Reports
INEC urged the public and media organizations to disregard the false reports and rely only on information disseminated through its official platforms.
The Commission warned that misleading claims could cause unnecessary confusion and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
With this clarification, INEC has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the 2027 General Election in line with constitutional and legal provisions.
Nigerians are advised to remain vigilant against misinformation and await official announcements from the Commission.
